OCPL is looking for a Library Assistant 2 in the Circulation Department! This is a 30 hour per week position (0.75 FTE) and is union-represented with pro-rated benefits, including medical/dental and leave bank accruals. The schedule will include evenings and weekends. This position will directly support the Circulation Coordinator and provide coverage on the Lobby Desk and Check-In Room

Summary

Organizes and performs a variety of clerical and technical library duties in a community-based library, ensuring patrons have access to materials, reference, and search resources.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Library Assistant II is the second in a multi-level career path for community Library services. The Library Assistant I provides circulation and customer service support. Advancement to Library Assistant II is possible by additional responsibility for opening the library, team leadership, and competency in customer service for circulation, reference, and special areas such as children\'s or foreign language sections. Advancement to Library Assistant III is based on need and requires specialization in library systems and technology, technical services, circulation, reference services, and/or children\'s services in addition to those competencies expected of a Library Assistant II.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Sample duties include but are not limited to:

  • Operates automated materials handling (AMH) system, including materials induction, logging and processing incoming crates, monitoring bin capacities and levels, basing monitoring of AMH system function using software; prepares items for courier transfer to other libraries; other related routine duties.
  • Loads shelving carts; sorts and organizes materials for shelving; transports materials to shelving areas and shelves according to appropriate systems and library protocols.
  • Consults automated reports to locate and retrieve materials for holds; ensures appropriate hold labels are affixed to held materials; shelves and organizes patron holds according to established procedure; assists patrons in locating holds for pickup. Checks shelves to resolve routine materials status questions and retrieves items.
  • Follows prescribed procedures to process returned library materials (including retrieving items from exterior bookdrops); assesses for damages; makes appropriate item status adjustments in Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Registers library patrons for library cards; reviews application information for completeness and accuracy, enters information into the computer; issues replacement cards as necessary; updates patron files.
  • Collects and processes fine payments and assesses charges for damaged and overdue materials; explains account status, charges, and applicable circulation policies to patrons.
  • Demonstrates and assists the public with the use of electronic resources including the automated catalog, online databases, and the internet.
  • Follows standard procedures and uses ILS to check out library materials to patrons; assists and instructs patrons with use of self-checkout terminals; assesses for damages; makes appropriate adjustments to book or patron status.
  • Follows up with patrons on overdue materials, more complex account questions.
  • Performs routine system maintenance activities, runs notices and printouts; performs minor troubleshooting.
  • In support of or absence of Circulation Coordinator, helps coordinate daily activities of the Library\'s Circulation Division.
Preferred candidates have experience in Circulation in a public library setting and experience in leading/coordinating the work of others.

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience
The position typically requires a certificate in library science curriculum or equivalent plus two years of experience in a library or instructional support setting. An Associates degree may substitute for some experience.

Knowledge and Skills

The position requires specialized knowledge of basic library methods, practices and terminology. Requires knowledge of personal computers to use common office productivity software and special cataloging, customer transaction, and search programs used by the Library. Requires a working knowledge of financial record keeping sufficient to summarize daily activity and reconcile customer accounts. Requires sufficient human relations and communication skills to exercise patience and interact courteously with patrons of all ages and to conduct library orientation. Requires sufficient math skills to add, count, and develop alphanumeric sequences.

Abilities
Requires the ability to perform all of the duties of the position with only general supervision and support. Requires the ability to follow detailed procedures such as standard library cataloging and filing rules. Must be able to maintain a well organized and attractive library setting. Must be able to apply and explain library rules, regulations and policies. Must be able to monitor and maintain acceptable customer behavior. Requires the ability to work as contributing member of a team, work productively and cooperatively with other teams and external customers, and convey a positive image of the City and its services. Must be able to perform routine clerical and record keeping duties. May be required to work evenings, weekends and attend meetings or activities outside normal working hours.

Physical Abilities
Must be able to function indoors in an office and/or library desk environment engaged in work primarily of a sedentary to moderately active nature. Requires hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversation and to project voice to a small group. Requires sufficient manual and/or finger dexterity to type/keyboard and otherwise operate microcomputers and other office equipment. Requires ambulatory ability to sit, walk, to move about office environs, and to lift and carry light to medium weight materials on an intermittent basis.

Licenses and Certificates

May require a valid driver\'s license.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors with minimal exposure to health and safety hazards.
