WHO WE ARE

DESCRIPTION:
This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement. Candidate\'s residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
As an intern for the Information Services department, you will have the opportunity to assist the team with day-to-day tasks like ticket and case work, threat hunting, log review, and contacting or interacting with users. In this position, you will gain insights into professional tools used in the Information Security industry. As an intern you will look forward to accessing and manipulating industry standard tools from vendors like Microsoft, Palo Alto, and Rapid 7. You will work with industry professionals to research, investigate, and mitigate threats in an enterprise environment.

What does a 2024 Internship with the Metropolitan Council entail?
As a 2024 Intern with the Metropolitan Council you will benefit from on-the-job training and mentoring along with participation in team projects, social events, and professional development. Interns will receive the opportunity to build professional relationships and enhance their interpersonal skills. Interns will also interact with their coworkers and participate in projects that directly impact business value.

Who is the Metropolitan Council?
The Metropolitan Council is made up of several operating divisions that service the Twin Cities Metropolitan area in a number of ways.
  • Metro Transit provides bus and light rail public transportation for the greater metropolitan area.
  • Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) manages wastewater treatment plants and the regional wastewater collection system for the seven-county metropolitan region.
  • Community Development is responsible for helping the Council shape its regional growth plan and Metro HRA provides affordable housing programs in the region.
  • Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) is responsible for the transportation planning functions as the Twin Cities metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for transportation.
  • Regional Administration provides support services (Finance, Payroll, HR, etc.) for the Council.
What you would do in this job

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Security Monitoring and Incident Response: Assist in monitoring security systems for anomalies and signs of intrusion. Participate in incident response activities, documenting incidents and contributing to post-incident reports.
  • Vulnerability Assessment and Management: Help conduct regular vulnerability scans on company systems and applications. Analyze scan results, prioritize vulnerabilities based on risk, and assist in the remediation process.
  • Security Policy and Compliance: Support efforts to ensure the Council\'s policies comply with regulatory and legal requirements. Assist in the development and revision of security policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • User Access Management: Assist in managing user accounts and permissions, ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to sensitive information. Participate in the process of granting, modifying, and revoking access as needed.
  • Security Awareness Training: Help develop and deliver security awareness training to employees. Contribute to the creation of training materials and campaigns that promote security best practices.
  • Security Audits and Assessment: Participate in internal and external security audits. Assist in gathering necessary documentation and evidence, and implement recommended changes to improve security posture.
  • Threat Intelligence Analysis: Support the threat intelligence gathering process by researching the latest cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities. Assist in analyzing threats and disseminating findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Security Project Assistance: Contribute to various information security projects as needed. This could involve researching new security technologies, participating in the implementation of security solutions, or contributing to cross-functional project teams to enhance security across the organization.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associate\'s, Bachelor\'s, or Masters) OR be a recent graduate (within 12 months from posting date) from a degree seeking program.
  • Candidate\'s residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to identify and resolve issues.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneDrive)
  • Information security course work, other computer science course work like networking, or systems administration.
  • An understanding of data security best practices and awareness of data privacy regulations.
  • A strong understanding of Microsoft, Palo Alto, and/or Rapid 7 is helpful.
DEGREE PROGRAM/AREA OF STUDY PREFERRED
  • Computer Science, Information Systems, or related study.

The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
