Position Highlights The mission of the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness (NSW), College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at the University of Arizona, is to lead in providing cutting-edge Research, outstanding Undergraduate and Graduate Programs, and Cooperative Extension activities that advance the discovery and translation of the roles of nutrition in optimizing health and wellness for people in Arizona, the nation, and the world. NSW takes a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach in discovering, integrating, extending, and applying knowledge of nutritional science to promote optimal nutritional status, health, wellness, and wellbeing, and to prevent and to treat chronic diseases including cancers, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and musculoskeletal disorders. The School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable academic advisor to support the School\xc3\xa2\xc2\x80\xc2\x99s first year students on main campus, by providing 1:1 and small group academic advising, and proactive efforts to connect them with resources, services, programs and other opportunities that enhance their experience and success. This team member will also support NSW\xc3\xa2\xc2\x80\xc2\x99s main campus recruitment goals by engaging at recruitment and outreach events on and off campus, and through their work with UArizona students seeking to change/declare a major in NSW.

This job requires working on Main campus and going out on location for specific events and recruitment and outreach activities, which may occur on evenings and weekends. Remote work arrangements and flex-scheduling will be determined based on the demand/schedule for presence at events out of the office.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising:

  • Provides primary advising to all first-year students within each of the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness (NSW) majors \xc3\xa2\xc2\x80\xc2\x93 Nutritional Sciences, Nutrition and Food Systems, Nutrition and Human Performance, Precision Nutrition and Wellness.
  • Provides advising support for all students interested in exploring or declaring any of the NSW Majors or Minors.
  • Provides consistent drop-in advising for general student questions within all NSW School undergraduate programs.
  • Evaluates use of transfer credit.
  • Assesses individual students\' stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Assists undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options.
  • Identifies educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists student with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implication.
  • Counsels students on options to satisfy degree requirements.
  • Monitors students\xc3\xa2\xc2\x80\xc2\x99 academic progress-determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in completion.
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
  • Using University systems, maintains student files and records.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulations and policies that impact students\' educational options.
Student Retention:
  • May be assigned to teach NSW success courses for new students, students with an academic eligibility status, and/or to specific populations based on academic discipline.
  • Assist and support retention programs that include mentorship; programming for first generation students and supporters; career and major exploration; and others that may be implemented within the college.
  • Assists with planning and coordinating Student Services events such as career week events, guest speaker panels, and student appreciation events.
Recruitment, Outreach, and Onboarding:
  • Respective unit and major exploration advising tasks including data analysis, targeted advising communications for students, development of department student orientation materials.
  • Supports the change-of-major process.
  • Participates in academic advising for all new student orientations.
  • Represents NSW at various recruitment events on University of Arizona campus and in wider Tucson community.
Service and Professional Development:
  • Active in academic advising communities on campus, as well as national professional organizations for academic advisors; attend college and departmental committees as representative and advocate of respective unit academic advisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and approaches related to academic advising, teaching, or counseling in higher education.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working in advising or student services at the University of Arizona or similar higher education institution.
  • Fluent Spanish speaker.
