Job Description


Overview

The goals of the advisors in FJ Management Center for Student Success are to:

Increase persistence, retention, and graduation rate of business students through personal advising relationships that focus on student strengths, interests, goals, and values.
Assist students in finding experiential learning experiences that best fit their career goals.
Create an inclusive advising environment where student identities are recognized and valued, implicit and unconscious bias are continually discussed among the team, and employees are making intentional progress on the Intercultural Development Continuum.
Implement best practices from the Complete College America Purpose First initiative.
Align academic advising training and development with the Appreciative Advising framework and core competencies from the National Academic Advising Association: The Global Community for Academic Advising (NACADA).
Update processes and practices to align with Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) for Academic Advising Programs.

The work is organized to promote student success while creating community, promoting equity, and simplifying systems and processes.

This role will supervise 5-11 professional positions.

The Academic Advisor Supervisor reports to the Director of the FJ Management Center for Student Success. This classification supervises other Academic Advisors and student employees.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead the advising of prospective, current, and former students.
  • Assist students in the development of academic plans and referrals to academic and co-curricular resources.
  • Engage in proactive advising interventions designed to increase student persistence, retention, and completion.
  • Assess academic level.
  • Attend to student academic inquiries.
  • Assist in the resolution of individual academic problems.
  • Advise on academic program changes.
  • Prepare students\xe2\x80\x99 graduation applications for Dean approval in Degree Works.
  • Assist students with semester-by-semester planning in preparation for declaring a major
Additional Functions:
  • Provides advising services in person, by phone, or by email.
  • Provides accurate information related to curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures.
  • Provides information and strategies to utilize available campus resources and services.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Assists students to understand the purpose of higher education and the impact on life goals.
  • Discusses the benefits of building a learning community, network, and support system among peers, professors, and mentors.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other university and non-university resources.
  • Maintains records and documentation of advising interactions.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in communication studies, human development, psychology, sociology, social work, or related field.
  • 4+ years of professional student development experience.
  • Experience developing, carrying out, and assessing developmental programs for engaging current students and monitoring students\xe2\x80\x99 progress toward academic and career goals.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and distributing relevant data regarding student needs, preferences, and performance for use in unit and institutional decisions.
  • Experience identifying vulnerable (academically, likelihood to persist) students and develop programming to connect those students with appropriate resources to facilitate student persistence, retention, and degree completion.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in higher education administration, counseling, human development, communication studies, or related field.
  • Experience advising students including creating semester-by-semester graduation plans, monitoring caseload progress toward graduation or declaring a major, assisting students in making responsible and informed decisions impacting academic progress.
  • Experience hiring, training, and supervising professional staff and/or student employees.
  • Experience researching and sharing best practices for the office, university, and advising community on student development topics.
  • Experience managing an office budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to make complex decisions, identify issues within area of coordination, problem solve, resolve, and communicate issues and their resolutions with advisors and administrators.
  • Experience teaching and/or building curriculum.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in a variety of current and emerging technology platforms.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work independently, build relationships with stakeholders, speak in front of large audiences, and communicate institutional policies and procedures to stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and understanding of exploring/undecided students.
  • Ability to lead training and day-to-day efforts of direct reports.
  • Ability to use professional judgement in ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to work with students in 1:1 or group settings.
  • Ability to work with diverse student backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated excellence in guiding students as they define and develop realistic goals.
  • Ability to assess the success of programs/coordination areas and manage budgets.
  • Verbal and written communication skills and effective public speaking skills including ability to communicate with individuals as well as groups.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs with verification of working collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability to learn and maintain current knowledge of complex program requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and/or deliver programs.
  • Knowledge of best supervisory practices and ability to supervise staff.
  • Ability to manage a budget.
