Departmental Overview

The Department of Sociology is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top programs in the United States. It is a large, dynamic and diverse academic department in the Social Sciences Division of the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley, consisting of 28 tenure-track faculty, 16 career staff, 13 visiting instructors, 18 visiting scholars, and approximately 180 ASE appointments. The Department of Sociology has approximately 680 undergraduate majors and 140 doctoral degree students. The Department of Demography is widely regarded as among the best and most creative demography programs in the world, occupying a unique niche in the population studies landscape, with a strong focus on formal demography, population theory, and on the relationship between demographic dynamics and social, cultural, and economic dynamics. The Department has 4 tenure-track faculty, 4 emerti faculty, 4 career staff, and 2 visiting instructors, 1 visiting scholar, 5 postdocs. The Department administers a Demography Ph.D., a Sociology-Demography Ph.D., a Demography M.A. degree and an undergraduate minor, and hosts the Bay Area Colloquium in Population.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic advice and counsel to both Department Chairs by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and organization policies, collective bargaining agreements, academic personnel procedures and practices.
  • Review the preceding year\'s faculty academic personnel case preparation process.
  • Develop a case schedule and plan for the coming year. Ensure timely and accurate completion of required actions.
  • Manage and oversee the preparation of academic personnel cases for ladder-rank, adjunct, lecturers, and emeritus faculty in the department.
  • Prepare faculty merit cases, writing a first draft and filling in sections in APBears for the Chair\'s review.
  • Other academic personnel actions include: recruitment, appointment, appraisal, separation, merit review, change of status, summer salary and administrative stipends, sabbatical and other leaves, and recalls for teaching and/or research.
  • Submit transactions via ServiceNow reappointments, merit and promotion increases.
  • Ensure these actions are initiated in a timely fashion.
  • Assure that cases have been prepared in accordance with relevant policies, that they are complete and that all information is accurate.
  • Coordinates the academic search process, including placement of ads, drafting of search plans, conducting the initial screening of materials submitted, and coordinating all candidate logistics.
  • Analyzes and interprets guidelines and policies to provide advice and counsel to unit clients on issues such as compensation, work-eligibility (visa) matters such as H1-B processing or PR application, and benefits considerations.
  • Counsels Senate and non-Senate faculty and other academic staff concerning moderate to complex work-related problems with relevant policies, that they are complete and that all information is accurate.
  • Facilitates/manages the academic review processes, identifying issues relating to policy and compensation, and communicates schedules and deadlines.
  • Ensure that start-up packages are included with new appointments to the ladder-rank, and process any requests for faculty participation in housing assistance programs.
  • Facilitate communication between new faculty and appropriate departmental and campus contacts.
  • Serve as the department subject matter expert in the area of academic personnel policy.
  • Inform faculty and staff of relevant policies; advise on policy issues.
  • Research and interpret relevant college, campus, university, state and federal policies and regulations.
  • Recommend and draft policies as requested.
  • Serve as a member of the administrative staff team, participate in department functions, meetings, and assigned tasks.
Required Qualifications
  • Requires thorough knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
  • Thorough knowledge of and/or can quickly learn organization and college goals, priorities and values and the legal and human implications of decisions.
  • Thorough knowledge of systemwide and organization policies, union contracts, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration.
  • Knowledge of trends in academia, especially in areas of academic planning, human resource management and administration.
  • Ability to analyze complex management issues, develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel.
  • Ability communicate effectively with diverse audiences at varying levels both verbally and written.
  • Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address moderately complex issues and present nuanced analyses.
  • Ability to lead or work on multiple projects with different deadlines.
  • Bachelor\'s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $74,300.00 - $105,000.00.
