The Academic Technologist serves as the primary point of contact for Information Technology needs for faculty and staff in designated academic departments and works to systemically improve IT literacy. As part of the Academic Liaison for Computing team, the successful candidate is expected to cultivate the effective and innovative use of e-Learning resources through positive professional working relationships, awareness of and expertise in discipline-related IT resources, and consultative, just-in-time support. The Academic Technologist provides training and customized support to faculty across designated disciplines in the area of academic technologies that promote student engagement, learning, and success.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactively develop positive, professional working relationships with academic personnel.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and trends, and develop useful expertise with current IT resources and practices relevant to the designated academic areas.
  • Serve as the main point-of-contact for technology support of designated academic personnel.
  • Provide tier 1, 2, or 3 troubleshooting and service of computer and telecom equipment used by designated academic personnel, and coordinate resolutions with other user support staff.
  • Provide and promote excellent customer service through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
  • Collaborate with instructors and researchers to identify, develop, and implement appropriate technology solutions for teaching and learning.
  • Initiate and develop small- to medium-sized academic computing projects that support teaching and learning across multiple departments.
  • As part of the Academic Liaison for Computing team, perpetuate a culture of effective and innovative integration of pedagogy and technology based upon research and industry best practices.
  • Consult with instructors to design, develop, and implement specific course-related instructional strategies with technology, especially related to the University\'s Learning Management System, Moodle.
  • In coordination with other members of the e-Learning team including the Faculty Director of Online and Blended Learning Pedagogies, manage e-Learning support of designated academic personnel to resolution in a \'train as you solve\' fashion.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan and deliver individual or group faculty development workshops in response to faculty instructional needs and specific course modalities.
  • Participates in appropriate IT department and working group meetings to stay informed about current IT systems and policies as well as provide feedback and guidance for the design and evolution of IT systems and policies.
  • Support and participate in projects brought forward by the Administrative Information Systems and Systems & Networking teams.
  • Supervise student workers deployed in troubleshooting and service tasks.
  • All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • A typical work environment is an office, working at a desk for long periods of time, with visits to faculty and staff offices as needed.
  • Regular computer use.
  • Lifting and carrying of computer equipment periodically, up to 30 lbs.
  • Occasional travel to the Rochester location and other off-site locations may be required.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree, preferably in a field related to designated departments.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in an IT user support field.
  • Proven track record of high-quality customer service in a technology-related environment.

  • Ability to integrate pedagogical concepts and technology to support learning outcomes.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master\'s degree or certificate in Instructional Technology.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in Information Technology.
  • Previous experience increasing end-user technical literacy.
  • Experience working with Moodle.
