Job Description


The Probation Officer will work under the supervision of the Chief Judge or their designee, but is expected to carry out tasks independently. The Officer will maintain accurate and up-to-date probation files and lists of probationers and pretrial release individuals for use by law enforcement and detention services. Additionally, the Officer will monitor the progress of individual probationers and report to the Court on their compliance with specific conditions such as attending education classes, seeking medical care, and completing substance abuse treatment. In case of noncompliance or failure to meet the Court's orders related to drug or alcohol use, the Officer will report to the Court and recommend revocation or other suspended sentence. The Officer will also collaborate with referral service providers to ensure effective communication of information to and from the Court regarding completion of ordered services.ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Uphold the oath of office by exercising authority appropriately.
  • Follow legitimate orders promptly.
  • Create and maintain accurate and updated records of probation cases.
  • Keep current lists of probationers and pre-trial releases for law enforcement use.
  • Track and inform probation clients of specific conditions and goals to be accomplished.
  • Regularly check jail intake logs for potential probation violations.
  • File motions for revocation, modification, or early release from probation as necessary.
  • Be available to probation clients during set office hours and schedule office visits accordingly.
  • Work from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or as arranged with their supervisor.
  • Conduct random drug and alcohol tests for probation clients, as requested by the court.
  • Monitor probation clients' payments of fines, court costs, and restitution.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with public and private agencies that offer rehabilitative services to better serve probation clients.
  • Exhibit high moral standards, emotional stability, integrity, firmness, and professional appearance and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with close or minimal supervision.
  • Show initiative by taking a keen interest in work-related activities, exceeding expectations.
  • Display the capacity to identify problems and make logical decisions, while facilitating group discussions to reach resolutions.
  • Exercise good judgment in decision-making and write clearly and concisely using proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and penmanship.
  • Complete work assignments and reports efficiently and within set deadlines.
  • Operate a motor vehicle in all weather conditions, and maintain necessary fluids such as gasoline, oil, and windshield washer solution.
  • Communicate effectively, actively listening and conveying empathy, with the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Establish effective communication with the community, criminal justice personnel, and other agency or provider personnel.
  • Apply common sense and logical decision-making in high-pressure situations.
  • Recognize and employ humor in daily work activities.
  • Refer clients to specialized services as needed for their individual needs.
  • Establish ongoing relationships with probation clients to follow court orders.
  • Assist with serving subpoenas and summons as directed by their supervisor.
  • Promote good community relations in their daily assignments.
  • Maintain good moral character both on and off duty to avoid reflecting poorly on the Omaha Tribal Court.
  • The capacity to understand and follow basic instructions, brief written communications, memos, and court orders.
  • Proficiency in writing simple letters and creating motion templates.
  • The skill to communicate information clearly and persuasively in individual and small-group settings with clients, service providers, and other members of the criminal justice system.
  • The ability to deliver effective oral presentations in court when required.
  • Capable of using common sense and comprehension to follow detailed yet straightforward written or verbal instructions.
  • Able to solve problems that involve a limited number of tangible variables in common situations.
  • Perform other related duties assigned within the scope of their classification, as dictated by the situation.
  • Other duties may also be assigned or current duties altered as seen fit by supervision.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Prefer Associates Degree (A.A. in Criminal Justice) or equivalent two-years college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or combination of education and experience.
  • As a minimum shall possess a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); one to three month's related experience and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and/or REGISTRATIONS:
  • Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license from Nebraska or another state and must be insurable.
  • Should have a clean criminal record with no convictions for a crime that could result in a prison sentence of one year or more, in any state or country. Additionally, the candidate must not have been pardoned for such an offense, nor had a conviction for such an offense overturned or reversed by a Court of competent jurisdiction.
  • The candidate must not have been convicted of any offense involving alcohol, drugs, domestic abuse, child abuse or neglect, abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult, sexual offenses, violence, theft, or any offense that raises questions about their moral character, in this or any other jurisdiction, for at least five (5) years before the date of application.
  • There should be no criminal proceedings pending against the candidate in this or any other jurisdiction for any offense involving alcohol, drugs, domestic abuse, child abuse or neglect, abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult, sexual offenses, violence, theft, or any offense that raises questions about their moral character.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and/or ABILITIES:
  • The candidate must possess a dependable personal automobile and personal insurance.
  • The candidate must have a home telephone or be able to obtain the service.
