Job Description


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

In our drive to develop and introduce cutting edge products ahead of competition, critical advanced components are being developed in parallel with higher levels of integration, thus creating an NPI situation involving interdependencies and risk management. This Advanced Component Engineering role focuses on the reliability and qualification testing of silicon photonic components, integrated circuits, and optical subassemblies in a very high-complexity, dynamic R&D environment.

The specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Apply broad and deep knowledge of materials science, process/fabrication, customer/field application, environmental stress failure modes to assess the risks and build a design FMEA for new technologies.
  • Based on these risks, work with the appropriate owners to develop/review process control, pre-qualification, product qualification, and ongoing reliability test plans for these devices.
  • Plan, execute, and analyze reliability studies and supplier data to assess component reliability risk. This process should include performing statistical and reliability analysis of data including time-trending of data, comparisons of means and distributions, estimate confidence limits, estimate reliability including FIT values and publishing Qualification Test Reports (QTR\'s), tabulating and graphing data, summarizing & disseminating results, and obtain reviews and approval.
  • Build library of failure modes observed with these new technologies.
  • Continually assess risk the components/subassemblies may pose on the final product and on our business, escalating high risk issues and making recommendations to the team, management, and suppliers to prevent reliability failures.
  • Perform process audits at foundries to validate quality systems, process controls, product quality, and overall product risk.
  • Comply with all applicable quality, health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Education & Experience
  • PhD in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering or equivalent in a related field is desired, can be met by equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience
Skills
  • Leadership capabilities to collaborate with internal and external suppliers and stakeholders to assess and qualify advanced components.
  • Strong interpersonal, teaming, and problem-solving skills.
  • Work effectively with other members of Coherent Corp.
  • Expertise with semiconductor lasers, IC, silicon photonics devices, and semiconductor packaging reliability, processes, and failure modes
  • Knowledge of CMOS device and process qualification stress testing and the failure modes these stresses can induce.
  • Knowledge of qualification stress testing such as HTOL, HTS, biased Damp Heat, TC, TS, CTS, CMR, Vibration, Mechanical Shock, ESD and the failure modes these stresses can precipitate.
  • Well-versed in the use of statistical analytical techniques
  • Collaborative interpersonal skills necessary to leverage and support cross-functional teams.
  • Good technical communication skills required.
  • 5% Travel
Working Conditions
  • Office environment, Test Lab environment, occasionally visiting fabs/foundaries for audits

This Engineer will collaborate closely with various Product R&D, NPI, Manufacturing and Quality organizations at global sites as well as work directly with external component suppliers to assess reliability risks based on their qualification and reliability studies. Occasional travel is required.
