Novavax is seeking a Research Associate to join our Downstream Process Development Analytical Support group in Gaithersburg, MD. Qualified individuals will play a role in downstream process development and process characterization support activities, new technology evaluation, and technical support of cGMP manufacturing for proteins, nanoparticles, and virus-like particle (VLP) based vaccines. The candidate will ensure scientifically sound experimental execution. The candidate will be responsible for assisting with drafting technical development reports summarizing critical data. The candidate is expected to be highly self-motivated, well-organized, and an innovative thinker focused on execution with a sense of urgency.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform and analyze ELISAs to quantify target protein detected from different unit operations for Upstream and Downstream Development groups.
  • Utilize automated liquid handling systems and instrumentation for sample dilution, wash steps, incubations, and spectrophotometry reads.
  • Troubleshoot and investigate out-of-specification analytical data from liquid handling machines and other instrumentation.
  • Perform routine sample testing using various techniques and assays, including SDS-PAGE, Western Blots, ELISAs, colorimetric assays, and additional assays as needed (training will be provided).
  • Analyze and determine the applicability of laboratory data to draw conclusions, make appropriate recommendations, and compile them into meaningful representations.
  • Present results in team meetings.
  • Follow SOPs and run experiments according to SOPs.
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies and reagents, responsible for ordering more as required.
  • Maintain records of all assays performed, in both electronic format and in laboratory notebooks.
  • Assist in the writing, reviewing, and editing of standard operating procedures and reports.
  • Assist in the maintenance of department records, raw material / finished product inventories, and improving lab operation efficiencies.
  • Individual will assist in shipping and receipt of supplies.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with colleagues from Discovery, Process Sciences, Upstream Development, Formulation Development, and Analytical Development teams
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
  • BS in Bio/Chem Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Life Sciences, vaccine development, or a related scientific discipline with 2 plus years of relevant industry experience in pharmaceutical or biotech companies.
  • Knowledge and experience in protein-based product development and characterization is a plus (SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, ELISAs, Colorimetric assays, etc.)
  • Proficient in Windows-based software including Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Good communications skills
  • Excellent multi-tasking and organizational skills.
  • High energy level and a positive outlook coupled with the requisite \xe2\x80\x9ccan do\xe2\x80\x9d attitude and a willingness to do what it takes to achieve personal and organizational goals and overcome obstacles.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience with virus-derived recombinant products and/or viral particles and ELISA assays is a plus.
  • Knowledge and expertise in principles and practice of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) preferred.
