The Robert Russa Moton Museum invites candidates to apply for the position of Assistant Director for Marketing and Community Engagement (FA015). The Assistant Director for Marketing and Community Engagement plans and executes marketing strategies and community outreach efforts at the Museum under the guidance of the Executive Director.

The Robert Russa Moton Museum, a National Historic Landmark and Virginia\'s leading civil rights museum, is located in Farmville, in Prince Edward County, Virginia. The mission of the museum is to preserve and constructively interpret the history of civil rights in education, specifically as it relates to Prince Edward County, and the leading role its citizens played in America\'s transition from segregation toward integration. Moton strives to promote dialogue and advance positions that ensure empowerment within a constitutional democracy. The Museum has been affiliated with Longwood University since 2015. The Museum works with a diverse array of visitors of all ages.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Manage advertising/promotional efforts such as press releases, taking photos, news stories, and basic website updates
  • Design, write, and organize social media posts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) for the Moton Museum in collaboration with LetterPress Communications
  • Conduct outreach efforts to local community organizations, schools, and create collaborative programming
  • Coordinate media-related inquiries, such as obtaining quotes for news stories, submitting press releases on behalf of the museum, and assisting with photo permissions
  • Supervise high school and college-age students working with the museum, such as Longwood\'s Moss Scholars Program
  • Develop and implement museum public programs and events, especially the annual fundraising event Moton Live!
  • Develop the Moton Museum monthly newsletter and annual report
  • Conduct tours of the museum\'s permanent exhibition to visitors
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Position will include some evening and weekend events.
Requirements:
  • Master\'s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field preferred; Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent combination of work experience and/or training required.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with diverse populations and perspectives required
  • Experience working with K-12 grade groups in an educational setting preferred
  • Experience working in a museum setting, communications, or community outreach preferred
  • Experience working in a small, team-based, collaborative working environment preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, customer service, and organizational skills required
  • Ability to use computer software programs, such as Microsoft Office suite, and to use social media platforms required; experience with WordPress preferred.
  • Availability to work some evening and weekend events
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy materials up to and/or greater than forty pounds unassisted
  • Must have a valid driver\'s license and the ability to meet Commonwealth of Virginia and Longwood University criteria for operating state/university-owned vehicles
Additional Information:

This position is a full-time, administrative & professional faculty, exempt position. Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience. A successful criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
