JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director for Orientation Programs will advise and assist in the development of undergraduate student Orientation programs for Storrs and the Regional Campuses (Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury). Duties include developing orientation programs and services, supervising and training student staff, coordinating programmatic logistics, and being responsible for evening and/or overnight components of the student programs. The position will also research and develop assessment projects for the purpose of continuous improvement to orientation programs at the University of Connecticut. This position will report to the Director of New Student Programs and be housed in the Orientation Services office on the Storrs campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Director with the development, coordination, and implementation of all orientation programs, including Student and Family Summer Orientation, Winter Orientation, and International Student Orientation on the Storrs campus.
  • Advise on program development for the regional campuses.
  • Research, create, and administer assessment projects related to programs, training, and staff.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of all student staff positions (graduate assistant, practicum student, coordinators, and orientation leaders on the Storrs campus.
  • Advise on the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff positions on the regional campuses.
  • Manage the hiring and onboarding process for all student staff in collaboration with Student Employment.
  • Oversees the creation, scheduling, execution, and evaluation of training for all student staff with various campus stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver training to student staff on a variety of topics including but not limited to leadership development, community development, conflict resolution, group dynamics and facilitation, and crisis management.
  • Reviews and prepares contracts for execution of off-site vendors.
  • Maintains records of recruitment strategies, training schedules and materials, program schedules and materials, assessment projects, and all other pertinent files that relate to orientation.
  • Manages administrative staff to ensure that all logistical aspects of orientation programs (i.e. catering, AV, set-ups, parking, housing, etc.) on the Storrs and regional campuses (as needed) have been completed.
  • Ensures that all trainings and programs are compliant with University policies and procedures pertaining to events.
  • Manages the scheduling of presenters for all orientation sessions and directs staff to assist when possible.
  • Oversee the formation, vetting, and coordination of presentation materials for all programs.
  • Serve as the day of event manager for either the student or family program.
  • Manage all evening/overnight orientation experiences. This includes handling and/or triaging behavioral issues with participants and/or student staff, as well as problem-solving programmatic issues that may arise.
  • Represent the Office at Admissions yield events as needed.
  • Serve on divisional and University committees representing the Orientation Office.
  • Perform related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor\'s degree in a related field.
  • 3-4 years of experience working in Orientation, Retention, Transition, First Year Experience, Admissions, Student Activities, and/or Residential Education.
  • Knowledge of planning and implementing Orientation, first-year/transfer/family/transitional programs, and/or student leadership trainings.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, new students, and families in an undergraduate college environment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to, appreciation of, and desire to learn about diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice topics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently; excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to analyze, think critically, and problem-solve.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, meet tight deadlines, and manage large workloads.
  • Willingness and ability to work irregular hours during Orientation periods.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master\'s degree.
  • Knowledge and experience using VisualZen (VzO) onboarding platform and/or an online onboarding system.
  • Knowledge and experience using Qualtrics and/or other types of assessment software.
APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, permanent position. The salary range for this position is $54,734 - $71,154 commensurate with education and experience.
