Brief Position Overview

The Department of Agricultural and Technology Education includes faculty working with secondary education, extension education, and industry clientele. It consists presently of three tenure track teaching faculty and about 100 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department currently supports four undergraduate majors as well as a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education. Collaborative endeavors are highly valued. The Department is one of six academic program areas within the College.

The successful applicant will be located on the MSU Bozeman campus. Montana and the surrounding region provide exceptional opportunities for field instruction, research, and professional growth.

General Statement

Founded in 1893 as a Land Grant University, Montana State University (MSU) is composed of nine academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. Currently, the University hosts an enrollment of over 15,000 students, including approximately 2,000 graduate students. MSU is classified as one of 146 U.S. Research Universities (very high research activity) by the Carnegie Foundation.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Agricultural and Technology Education seeks a talented, enthusiastic individual who will enhance our agricultural education instructional programs by:

  • Providing primary instructional leadership for courses related to school-based agricultural education teacher preparation;
  • Teaching traditional and on-line graduate and undergraduate courses;
  • Advising undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Supervising agricultural education teaching candidates and interns;
  • Developing a sustainable research program that will advance agricultural education while serving the land grant mission of Montana State University; and
  • Secure funding from external sources to support a sustainable research program. The initial role assignment will be 70% teaching, 20% research, and 10% service.
The candidate should have a strong interest in contributing to the overall goals of the Department and is expected to play a strong role in delivering futuristic programs.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills * Earned Doctorate in agricultural education, extension education, or a closely related discipline at time of employment.
  • Three years of secondary agricultural education (or closely-related) teaching experience.
  • Ability and desire to work with students in teaching, recruiting, and advising.
  • Ability to conduct research and participate in outreach programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills * Demonstrated ability to employ innovative teaching approaches.
  • Demonstrated expertise in distance education, program development, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding independently and within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Publication record in peer reviewed journals.
  • Knowledge of the extension service system.
  • Demonstrated ability to work interactively with governmental agencies, the private sector, collegial peers, and the public.
  • Ability to make state, national, and international scholarly contributions to the profession in agricultural and/or extension education.
The Successful Candidate Will

Be a dynamic educator who will: (a) help MSU continue to provide outstanding teaching, research and service programs and (b) have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, research sponsors, secondary and extension educators, and the public.
