This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Planning
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and occasional night meetings.
LOCATION: 4700 Elmore Road

Example of Duties

Under general direction within the Planning Department, this position is responsible for the performance of professional level planning work to include the research, analysis, and preparation of current planning technical and planning related issues primarily involving zoning and platting cases and permits, and other planning and development reviews. Duties include: meeting with potential planning permit applicants and assisting with application preparation; intake and review of planning case applications; holding pre-application meetings; researching case histories; field checking applications against actual site conditions; reviewing case comments received from other agencies; conducting pre-and post-application conferences with applicants and their advisors; preparing case reports for administrators, boards and/or commissions; and writing technical reports and preparing exhibits. Also function as technical staff to planning related boards, commissions, and committees. Prepare case findings and conclusions. Write and present zoning cases, site plans, and other planning and development reviews as well as findings of fact and records of appeal for cases. Make public presentations before boards and commissions. Review board minutes. Ensure case compliance with approval conditions.

Position involves a very high level of public contact, responding to inquiries about planning issues from the general public, land development professionals, and other agencies. Interacts with public in person and by phone to answer/resolve zoning code related questions, and refer individuals to appropriate departments as necessary.

At the associate level, the position works under the guidance of more senior personnel and handles less complex planning cases and projects. Must possess the ability to multitask to include the potential for directing the prioritization of work for technical and board support staff; and be self-directed, motivated, and work independent as well as a team member.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) years of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Associate\'s degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or a related discipline and four (4) years of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Bachelor\'s degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or a related discipline and two (2) years of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Master\'s degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or a related discipline and urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver\'s License by the time of hire.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant\'s Alaska driver\'s license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver\'s license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual\'s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
