Job Description




The purpose of the class is to repair, maintain and service vehicles. The class is responsible for Sheriff\'s Office vehicles and equipment for assigned area of responsibility, including vehicle outfitting. The class works according to some procedures; decides how and when to do things under general supervision.

Position Duties

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Establishes the requirements of the job based on the corresponding work order.
  • Troubleshoots vehicles with mechanical problems to locate cause of the malfunction.
  • Performs repairs and/or preventive maintenance on vehicle as required.
  • Performs road test on vehicle after repairs to ensure proper and safe operation of same; completes work order.
  • Schedules repair and maintenance work, notifies customers of completion of work, and orders vehicle parts.
  • Picks-up and delivers vehicles to be serviced.
  • Outfits new vehicles and strips old vehicles as required.
  • Rebuilds motors, transmissions and brakes.
  • Installs emergency equipment in Sheriff\'s fleet vehicles including; emergency lighting, police radios, antennas, electric weapons storage, prisoner partitions, and related equipment.
  • Installs wiring, cables, video and computer equipment in Sheriff\'s fleet vehicles.
  • Installs and replaces graphic decals on vehicles.
  • Repairs and maintains emergency equipment.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in compliance with Department policies and procedures.
  • Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires High School Diploma or equivalent and formal training, special courses, or self-education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one (1) year of college education or specialized advanced training in Automotive Repair or a closely related field.
  • Requires Valid Florida Class Driver\'s License (must be maintained for duration of employment)
  • Requires minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
CERTIFICATION INCENTIVES:
Automotive Technicians with the following certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) are eligible to receive incentive pay of;

Certified Mechanic A $50.00 bi-weekly (requires 3 of the following ASE certifications in no particular order: A1 Engine Repair, A2 Automatic Transmission, A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical, A7 Air Conditioning)
Certified Mechanic B $50.00 bi-weekly (requires 3 of the following ASE certifications in no particular order: A1 Engine Repair, A2 Automatic Transmission, A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical, A7 Air Conditioning)
Advanced Certified Mechanic $100 bi-weekly (requires the following certifications: A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles, A8 Engine Performance, and L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist)
Emergency Law Enforcement Vehicle Installation Technician Certification $50.00 bi-weekly

Each certification must be maintained in order to qualify for the associated incentive.

Annual $150.00 shoe stipend.

Additional Information

Work is performed in an auto repair shop environment. Mechanics shall provide their own work hand tools and will be given an annual tool replacement/maintenance allotment not to exceed $500.00. Tools must be approved by the Fleet Manager and must relate to the mechanics job tasks and an annual $150.00 shoe stipend.

Work is completed in a forty-hour work week in eight (8) hour shifts both day and night; employees must be available to work wrecker duty twenty-four (24) hours a day/on call on a rotating basis. Current shift available is working Monday through Friday, 1330-2200 (1:30 pm to 10:00 pm).

Physical and dexterity requirements: Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching and lifting all of the time, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, and exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy. Must occasionally lift approximately 70 pounds. Must possess the strength and stamina required to work with heavy equipment and work in awkward positions.

This position requires successful completion of the Sheriff\'s Office pre-employment medical certification.

Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks. submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.

During an emergency, the Sheriff will determine who is considered an emergency responder and whose work is necessary to maintain the operation of law enforcement and correctional facilities. This determination is subject to change based on staffing and the operational needs of the agency.
