Duties Summary
------------------
This position is responsible for assessing the impact of development on burial sites, staffing the Hawaii Island burial council, responding to inadvertent burial calls in coordination with the Archaeological Branch, reviewing burial treatment plans and making recommendations to ensure the preservation of burial sites within the guidelines of Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) 6E and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and where applicable, the federal Native American Graves Protection Act (NAGPRA). This position is also responsible for registering burial sites; monitoring and evaluating the implementation of mitigation measures to ensure the protection of burials; conducting research to determine the authenticity of genealogical claims and claims regarding the recognition of known burial sites; and performing other duties as assigned.

Citizenship Requirement:
Applicants must be citizens, permanent resident aliens, or nationals of the United States. Non-citizens with unrestricted employment authorization from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service may also apply.
Recommended Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
Must be familiar with State and Federal burial and historic preservation laws, rules and regulations; Microsoft Office and ArcView; and Native Hawaiian Burial Protocols (may be family protocols).
Skills/Abilities to:
Must be able to interpret and apply laws and regulations; work with Native Hawaiian organizations and individuals; work with minimal supervision; research genealogical claims.
Recommended Education:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited four (4) year college with at least nine (9) credits in Hawaiian Studies, Ethnic studies with a focus on Hawaiians, History, Anthropology or a related field.
Two (2) years of specialized work experience as described under Recommended Experience below may be substituted for the nine (9) credits in the appropriate field. To be acceptable the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to ensure the possession of comparable knowledge.
Recommended Experience:
At least two (2) years of experience in any of the following areas: working with Native Hawaiian organizations, genealogical research, or participation in Native Hawaiian burial protocols.
License Requiremen
t:
Applicants must possess a valid license, type 3 or higher, to drive in the State of Hawaii.
Quality of Experience:
Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.
