Description and FunctionsOpen Until FilledGENERAL DESCRIPTION:This position performs a variety of tasks associated with the management, implementation, and retention of a large, complex, and highly confidential cancer records system. Review and interpret state-wide cancer information from medical records, pathology departments, hospitals, free-standing surgery centers, clinics, oncology, and radiation oncology centers to determine and code primary site(s), histological type, stage of disease, sites of metastases, and treatment given. Screening of pathology, cytology reports, hospital disease index, and vital records death index for reportable cancer cases. Analyze and abstract cancer data with complex coding from medical records and enter data into cancer registry software according to the American College of Surgeons- Commission on Cancer (ACos) guidelines. Perform continual quality assurance audits on abstracted medical data to ensure accuracy and completeness under the quality standards of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). Provides feedback to reporting entities regarding the quality assessment of their submitted data. Sends queries to physicians for detailed diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up information on patients. Collect follow-up and additional treatment information on patients to determine the spread, recurrences, or additional malignancies.Human Resource Contact:ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Review and interpret state-wide cancer information from medical records, pathology departments, hospitals, free-standing surgery centers, clinics, oncology, and radiation oncology centers to determine and code primary site(s), histological type, stage of disease, sites of metastases, and treatment given.
  • Screen pathology, cytology reports, hospital disease index, and vital records death index for reportable cancer cases.
  • Analyze and abstract cancer data from medical records including; demographic characteristics, history, topography, morphology, imaging and scans, diagnostic procedures, extent of disease, surgical procedures, treatment, staging, follow-up, physician information, and other required information in compliance with standards set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American College of Surgeons-Commission on Cancer (ACos), North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), and the Surveillance and Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER) and enter in coded format into master database.
  • Interpret and edit computer-generated error reports to achieve ongoing quality control and accuracy
  • Perform continual quality assurance audits on abstracted medical data to ensure accuracy and completeness under the quality standards of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR)
  • Collect follow-up and additional treatment information on patients to determine the spread, recurrences, or additional malignancies.
  • Monitors pathology labs, hospitals, physician offices, and free-standing clinics to report cancer cases promptly.
QualificationsPREFERENCES:Preference will be given to candidates with medical records knowledge and/or those who hold a current certification as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) previously known as CTR from the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA).KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and biology.
  • Knowledge and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend medical documentation including but not limited to medical records, radiology reports, pathology & cytology reports, and physician notes.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Communication skills - both written and oral.
