Eligibility for Incentive - Eligible deckhands must work up to 40 hours a week as needed to be qualified for the attendance incentive. Eligible deckhands who miss no more than 2 days (16 equivalent hours) of work for any reason will receive a lump sum payment of $3,000 at the conclusion of employment. Tardiness and missed call-out will count as a missed day. The incentive will not be paid if the employee is terminated for cause. Seasonal employment is defined as not less than 90 days and not longer than 119 days
Responsible for semi-skilled crew work in connection with the maintenance and operation of a passenger and vehicle ferry under the general supervision of the Operations Manager.
Examples of Duties
----------------------
Direct the loading and unloading of motor vehicles and passengers; block wheels of motor vehicles; check for gasoline leakage from motor vehicles; guard the lead line and safety cable restraints to prevent passengers from moving beyond established limits.
Assist in enforcing regulations including those pertaining to passengers smoking aboard the ferryboats and stopping motor vehicle engines.
Participate in water rescue and fire drills.
Act as lookout and watchperson and report obstacles in the path of the vessel while underway.
Operate ferry transfer bridges.
Handle lines and tackle for mooring vessel to slips and wharves.
Perform routine cleaning, painting, and other vessel maintenance work as assigned including, but not limited to decks, cabins, and flotation equipment.
Maintain courteous and cooperative relationships with the traveling public.
Provide water rescue as needed.
Operate fire equipment in the event of a fire and respond to emergencies under the direction of the vessel Captain.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES
:
May perform, on a limited basis, a variety of tasks in the operation, maintenance and improvement of the airport, roads, structures, and related areas when not deck handing.
Perform related other duties as directed by the Operations Manager.
Qualifications

Agility and physical strength required.
Ability to exercise courtesy and tact when in contact with other crew members, the general public, and personnel of other agencies.
Knowledge of procedures, practices and safety regulations pertaining to ferryboat operation and maintenance.
Ability to administer first aid treatment as required.
Ability to operate the gears of ferryboats and life-saving devices.
Requires ability to understand and carry out oral commands and written instructions involving terms commonly used in vessel communication.
Ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repairs on a vessel.
Ability to swim and carry out life-saving actions during emergencies.
Physical Activities Include:
Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, jumping, pulling, swimming, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lift and carry items and boxes up to forty (40) pounds.
Must be able to swim.
Administer CPR and first aid treatments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
:
High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.
At least one (1) year of vessel experience desired, including handling and splicing of sheets, lines, tackle and mooring equipment.
LICENSES
:
Valid State of Alaska driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Valid CPR and first aid card.
Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
