Job Title: Chemical TechnicianDepartment: C&S LabLocation: Plant Miller Power Plant (coal) with 2,640,000 kW total nameplate generating capacity in Greater Birmingham, AlabamaDuration: 1-year contract with annual renewal/extension and/or opportunity to be hired directly with the company as a full-time employee.Job OverviewThe Chemical Technician will be an integral part of the C&S Lab at Plant Miller, a major coal-fired power plant in Greater Birmingham, Alabama. This role involves conducting critical chemical analyses and supporting the operation of the plant to ensure optimal performance and compliance with environmental and safety standards.Key Responsibilities

  • Chemical Analysis: Perform routine and specialized chemical tests on water, steam, coal, and other samples to monitor and maintain quality standards.
  • Boiler/Water Analysis: Conduct regular analyses of boiler feedwater, cooling water, and condensate systems to ensure they meet specified parameters and support efficient plant operations.
  • Laboratory Instrumentation: Operate, calibrate, and maintain a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment. Ensure accurate and reliable test results by adhering to proper analytical methods and techniques.
  • Water Treatment: Assist in the operation and maintenance of the plant\'s water treatment facilities, including deionized water production, to support the generation process.
  • Data Management: Record, analyze, and report test results. Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal quality standards.
  • Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment. Stay updated on environmental regulations and ensure laboratory practices comply with industry standards.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment and mechanical parts. Troubleshoot and resolve issues to minimize downtime.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with plant operations and maintenance teams to provide technical support and guidance on chemical-related issues. Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives to improve plant efficiency and performance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or a similar field of science with a minimum of 12 semester hours in Chemistry.
  • Experience: Prior experience and knowledge of boiler/water analysis is preferred. Experience in a water treatment plant, industrial, or manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in the use, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Knowledge of proper analytical methods and techniques is essential.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Familiarity with mechanical parts and repair is preferred. Ability to perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance tasks on laboratory and plant equipment.
  • Water Treatment: Knowledge and experience in the production of deionized water is preferred.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong analytical skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively document and communicate test results and technical information.
  • Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and support plant operations and maintenance activities.

  • Location: This position is based at Plant Miller, a coal-fired power plant located in Greater Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Environment: Work is primarily conducted in a laboratory setting within an industrial power plant environment. Exposure to chemicals, high temperatures, and industrial noise may occur.
