Job Description


Summary:

The Clinical Manager directs nursing care and coordinates resources for a specified unit and performs administrative activities while providing leadership and support to staff.

The Clinical Manager has 24-hour responsibility of one or more patient units for directing and coordinating resources for the delivery of care to the patients and families.

Responsibilities:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Areas of responsibility include: Patient Focus; Human Resource Management; Financial Management; Departmental/Organizational Support; and Clinical Practice Management/Development and Human Capitol Development

Performance Improvement:

Collaborates and supports the health care team in the delivery of quality patient-focused care as evidenced by:

1. Driving Patient Safety initiatives by reporting sentinel events participating in root cause analysis promoting evidenced based practices and managing incident reporting. (AONE)

2. Develops role definitions for staff consistent with scope of practice. (AONE)

3. Analyzing data and identify opportunities for improvement in patient care.

4. Enhances unit performance by encouraging education and implementation of new concepts and technology.

5. Provides leadership in the development of policies procedures standards of care and critical paths to promote a positive patient outcome.

Human Resource Management Skills:

Facilitates and evaluates human capital to provide quality cost efficient patient care.

1. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to foster staffdevelopment.

2. Identifies and resolves nursing care conflicts related to the unit.

3. Facilitates staff meetings that engage staff members topics and issues that are important to the units success.

4. Provides support coaching and professional growth to the Assistant Clinical Manager for leadership development.

5. Has oversight to staff evaluations and developmental goals

6. Identifies staff educational needs and works with the Assistant Clinical Manager and the leadership triad to promote continuing education and lifelong learning.

7. Leads the development of the credentialing process and assesses compliance with unit standards.

8. Demonstrates respect for Rhode Island Hospital policies procedures union contracts and standards of professional nursing practice.

9. Has active role in staff recruitment and retention through off-shift presence as well as interview candidates using right fit model.

10. Conducts disciplinary action consistent with Rhode Island Hospital Policies.

Financial Management Core Behaviors:

1. Encourages financial conscientious staff with stimulation to participate in development of cost-effective ideas and plans.

Responsible to the organizational plan for development of short and long-term goals as evidenced by:

1. Collaborates with the Director to provide scheduled off-shift managerial coverage that will promote and achieve those goals set forth by both the hospital and the organization.

2. Directing and supervising unit staff for all shifts.

3. Identify and resolve nursing care conflict and problems related to the unit.

4. Communicate the status of unit operations activities and issues to the Director.

5. Participate in unit management meetings and recommend fiscal/patient care objectives standards and goals.

6. Engage in Shared Decision making that supports a just culture and shared governance.

7. Collaboration with nursing faculty to facilitate students to meet educational needs.

8. Participate in the formation of policy procedures and standards.

9. Influence the practice of nursing through participation in professional organizations.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

1. In collaboration with Director create and manage a strategic plan that aligns with the organizations Mission Vision and Values.

2. Ensures compliance with departmental and regulatory standards e.g. AORN The Joint Commission and CMS.

3. Achieve Certification in an appropriate field or specialty.

4. Promote interdepartmental Communication (AONE)

5. Assignment of staff to projects/committees to support department strategic and quality plans and follows through to ensure completion.

6. Investigates and documents concerns regarding personnel.

7. Counsels staff when requested/indicated and implements disciplinary steps when appropriate. Has input into and/or hires/terminates staff; performs performance reviews for all ancillary staff and has input into clinical staff evaluations.

8. Management Commitment is visible accessible and credible and builds positive working relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION:

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required and a Master of Science in Nursing or related field is required. Consideration will be given to candidates currently enrolled in a Masters program.

QUALIFICATIONS-EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience with demonstrated clinical and management skills. Maintains mandatory skills; remains current in practice and technology.
