Join Our Team as a Coastal Marine Institute Laboratory Lead!Are you passionate about marine research and eager to make a difference? The Coastal Marine Institute Laboratory Lead is your opportunity to support groundbreaking scientific activities at the Coastal Marine Institute Laboratory (CMIL). Under the guidance of an academic or administrative head, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of our facilities. Your responsibilities will include:

• Support Research Activities: Monitor and assist with all SDSU-sponsored laboratory and field research, ensuring seawater system availability, space utilization, storage, and safety.
• Emergency Response: Be the hero who responds to power outages and provides life support and backup power, even after hours and on weekends.
• Volunteer Coordination: Maintain records of CMIL users and coordinate onsite volunteers, acting as the go-to administrator.
• Tool and Equipment Management: Train faculty and students on the use of hand and power tools, as well as scientific equipment, for their research and construction projects.
• Website and Public Engagement: Administer the CMIL website, keep information up-to-date, and provide tours to educational groups, visiting scientists, and prospective students. Help organize annual fundraising events and open houses.
• Chemical and Safety Management: Oversee chemical inventory, train users on storage and labeling, and ensure proper waste disposal. Collaborate with SDSU Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and other agencies to maintain safety protocols.
• Seawater System Maintenance: Assist with the construction, configuration, and repair of the seawater system. Respond to emergencies and help with water chemistry testing and biomass reports.
• Research Support: Review and recommend Research Activity Plans, ensure compliance with IACUC standards, and support research diving activities.
• Scuba Tank Management: Fill scuba tanks, notify the Diving Safety Officer of any issues, and perform annual inspections.

• This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
• Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

• Experience working in a lab setting.
• American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) Scientific Diver Certification, including recurring dive physical examinations and CPR, First Aid, O2 administration training as required by AAUS standards desired.
• Dive Instructor Certification from a diver certification organization such as National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) or Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) desired.
• Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and the curriculum.
• Knowledge of the materials and supplies in the curriculum and the curriculum and their uses.
• Ability to plan, organize, and schedule activities; ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline.
• Ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.

Licenses/Certifications Required

• CA Driver's License or ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
• California small boat license (California Boater Card)

Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,174 per month.Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.San Diego State University offers a rich benefits package that constitutes a major portion of total compensation.
