Job Description


We are seeing a Commercialization Academy Manager who will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and management of a premier student fellowship program at JHTV, the mission of which is to bring the benefits of discovery to the world through licensing, corporate collaborations, and support of entrepreneurs. Called the Commercialization Academy (CA), this program is intended to (1) provide university students with exposure to and training/mentorship in the business of science, (2) provide JHTV with market analysis and other research insights to inform its commercialization activities, and (3) enrich JHTV\'s talent pipeline for its full-time professional positions.

Core responsibilities include setting program strategy, development and delivery of a training curriculum, implementation of workflows to optimize the efficiency of intern time, coordination with various JHTV departments to ensure that the business needs of each are met, recruiting and campus outreach to promote and improve the impact of the program, intern selection, direct management/mentorship of interns, and quality assurance. The incumbent will develop and maintain effective business relationships with university faculty and staff and be a trusted mentor to students and postdocs across disciplines of the university. The incumbent will instill the values of rigor, professionalism, respect, and integrity into the CA program.

This position reports to the Associate Director, Technology Development.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Program Strategy & Management

  • Manages, guides and sets policies for the CA program.
  • Oversees outreach, recruitment, division appointment, training, and performance evaluation of the CA interns.
  • Identifies and implements procedures to improve and maximize CA operational workflow.
  • Provides budgetary oversight for payroll event planning, equipment purchases, and software enhancements for the CA program.
  • Collaborates with HR colleagues to embed the culture of professional growth throughout JHTV, with particular emphasis on training and education.
Analytic & Decision-Making Support
  • Manages the analytical demands of JHTV in a timely, coordinated manner, while maintaining outstanding quality and ease of user interaction for JHTV, staff, faculty and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Implements analytical methodologies and related tools to improve the assessment of JHU intellectual property.
  • Oversees the creation of technology marketing and diligence information for JHU intellectual property assets, including market intelligence, financial valuation and other forms of assessment. Works with interns to,
  • Analyze individual invention disclosures on new technologies and oversees the development of structured reports of their scope, stage of development, and how they fit into integrated IP portfolios at JHTV.
  • Analyze the structure of intellectual property landscapes to develop an understanding of important organizations and trends in specific industries. Over time, develops a deep understanding of certain key industries relevant to the commercialization of major IP portfolios managed by JHTV.
  • Extract potentially relevant prior art from the intellectual property landscape to determine the ability to patent new technologies.
  • Identify markets that new technologies will integrate with, potential barriers to deploying the new technologies, and related licensing opportunities for JHTV.
  • Leverages proprietary relational database to ensure integration of data from various internal and external data sources for the purpose of analyzing sponsored research, market trends, and operational efficiencies.
  • Oversees analytic and research support provided by interns assigned to projects in the Corporate Partnerships, FastForward, and Technology Development teams.
Student Experience
  • Manages the educational experience for participants in the CA program, ensuring broad exposure to the business of science and deep hands-on learning.
  • Provides opportunities for cross training, career exploration, career coaching, and mentorship of the CA interns; specifically, coordinates rotational or project-based opportunities for students corresponding to the specific learning objectives of each.
  • Designs and manages new internship experiences as needed to support program, student and university goals.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and relationship-building skills and an interest in the development of others.
  • Able to think creatively about early-stage technology portfolios, and develop commercialization plans for the portfolios.
  • Able to understand nuanced early-stage technologies and how seemingly unrelated technologies fit together as integrated portfolios.
  • Able to think creatively about new ways to conduct analysis and improve the analytical capabilities of the office using novel approaches.
  • Able to deal well with unstructured problems.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree required in a related field such as science or engineering or a combination of a MBA and related experience in a scientific or academic setting.
  • Four (4) years related experience, including management experience, required, preferably in technology commercialization or higher education.
  • Experience working with relational databases required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
