The Communications Specialist shall conduct individual tutoring and consultation appointments and facilitate workshops and other educational programming and special events serving the entire Air University community at Maxwell AFB and distributed locations. Support will extend from professional and academic writing skills development to oral and visual communication skills development.
Responsibilities

  • Apply best practices in dialogic and collaborative communication and adhere to the Writing Lab\xe2\x80\x99s philosophy, mission, and standard operating procedures in offering one-on-one and group tutoring appointments to develop written, oral, and visual communication skills. Support students and faculty through individualized instruction/consultation, written and verbal feedback, and provision of additional resources (as needed) while demonstrating impeccable interpersonal skills and customer service ethos.
  • Assist the Lead Writing Specialist in maintaining digital and physical tutoring resources by creating, reviewing, and updating content.
  • Apply learning and program analytics to improving individual performance and Writing Lab programming in various modalities, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid programming via a learning management system.
  • Assist the Lead Writing Specialist with developing and delivering programming relevant to the entire Air University community based on needs assessments and direct requests.
  • Aggressively seek out emerging trends in communication scholarship and practice and prepare presentations of findings and recommendations that emphasize immediate application to the Air University mission. As requested by AUTLC, share these findings and recommendations with stakeholders throughout Air University, AETC, the Department of Defense, the multinational forces, and others in academic colloquia.
  • Design, develop, manage, and maintain the AUTLC\xe2\x80\x99s internal records management/standardization processes concerning Writing Lab initiatives. Maintain records for audit and reference purposes.
  • Research, prepare, present, and participate in meetings, reviews, briefings, and teleconferences/Video teleconferences (VTC). Research and prepare slides, agendas, minutes, and other program support products using the AUTLC\xe2\x80\x99s software and hardware (note: the AUTLC is currently using Microsoft Office products including Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Excel as well as Canvas as the AU Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Perform project management/process improvement activities, such as creating work breakdown structures/project plans and providing recommendations and implementation on the viability of new technologies/processes for research and faculty development to enhance student learning activities.
  • Maintain office records to memorialize and document all activities required to monitor and manage the AUTLC\xe2\x80\x99s mid-and long-term operations supporting this work.
  • Research and prepare materials to assist the AUTLC\xe2\x80\x99s support to external and higher headquarters planning.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Possess a graduate degree from an accredited institution earned in a discipline relevant to communication, English, rhetoric, composition, data visualization, or related fields
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience tutoring and teaching communication (written, oral, and visual, in both professional and academic styles) to diverse adult learners in face-to-face, blended, and online environments in group and one-on-one consultation settings
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience teaching students for whom English is a second or other language is highly valued
  • Experience with and an understanding of the dialogic and collaborative nature of tutoring and consulting
  • Expertise with and ability to accurately assess graduate-level academic and professional writing across the disciplines, particularly regarding alignment with an assignment prompt, thesis, structure and organization, coherence and cohesion, analysis, argument, source integration, writing style, and grammar/mechanics
  • Ability to articulate and employ theory and best practices from writing-center scholarship, particularly regarding student-centered tutoring/coaching strategies, direct vs. indirect feedback methods, and interpersonal skills
  • Must be familiar with and able to tutor/coach graduate-level students on effective oral and visual communication
  • Ability to articulate and employ adult-learning theory and best practices in tutoring/coaching and teaching environments, including at least a basic understanding of instructional systems design (e.g., ADDIE Model, Systems Approach to Training)
  • Must have evidence of high-quality research, writing, and presentation skills that bridge the gap between theory and practice, including experience creating impactful and engaging asynchronous digital resources in support of communication-skill development
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Teams, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, including experience effectively integrating technology in face-to-face, virtual, and hybrid learning environments
  • Must demonstrate exceptional organizational and communication skills and the ability to work independently on multiple concurrent and high-visibility projects under a deadline
