Job Description




SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

The Community Service Coordinator/Support Services Assistant is a combined position that directs and manages the community service program, tracks and keeps records of juveniles assigned to work off court ordered hours, reports hours to the probation staff and appropriate courts, and coordinates with local businesses and agencies. It also performs clerical, secretarial, accounting, technical and professional work to support the daily business functions and operations of the department.

Required to work weekends.

Education and Experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervise juvenile offenders on community service projects on a weekly basis.
  • Coordinate and plan with local businesses meaningful projects that need to be accomplished throughout the community.
  • Provide training and orientation meetings for juvenile offenders on the procedures of the community service program.
  • Monitor and track community service hours performed by participants.
  • Report completed hours to probation, judicial, and teen court staff as projected are completed. Also, compile data for grant reporting purposes as needed.
  • Operate a computer terminal and performs data entry and retrieval, and record management.
  • Answers incoming telephone calls and acts as receptionist for the office, screen telephone calls and requests for information, routing to appropriate department staff.
  • Receives visitors. Aids or directs them to the correct area. Provides general information and assistance. Resolves complaints or escalates to the appropriate staff member.
  • Participates, assists, and ensures compliance with the short- and long-term goals and objectives of the department. Formulates and develops recommendations and implements activities designed to accomplish operational goals.
  • Maintains familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Updates the juvenile administrative caseworker on work status and important developments they may need to know to function effectively.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience: Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required

knowledge, skills and abilities.

Certifications: Must maintain a valid Nevada driver\'s license

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA\'s)

An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills abilities upon application:

Knowledge
  • Principles and practices of juvenile supervision and grants.
  • Occupational hazards and safety practices related to supervision of juvenile probation programs.
  • Working knowledge of caseload management, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.
  • The functions of the Juvenile Probation Office.
  • Knowledge of the principles, functions and general practices of law enforcement agencies and the court system.
  • Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and regulations.
  • Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
  • Working knowledge of business correspondence formats, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.
  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.

  • Ability to develop projects that are appropriate for a juvenile community service program.
  • Work with, supervise, and relate to/with juveniles who are referred to the program.

  • Provide accurate documentation and record keeping.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing in a clear, concise manner
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Solving practical problems and dealing with a variety of variables in situations where standardization exists.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, city, county, state, and federal officials, and the public as needed. Dealing with problems courteously and tactfully.
  • Interpreting laws, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding the release of information to ensure that operations are in legal compliance.
  • Researching and analyzing information and making sound administrative analyses to solve problems.
  • Coordinating complex procedures for efficient and effective operations between law enforcement agencies.
  • Collecting, interpreting, and evaluating narrative and statistical data pertaining to policies, goals, and operational matters.
  • Complying with Elko County policies and departmental procedures.
  • Performing detailed clerical tasks in an accurate, orderly, and timely fashion.
  • Managing multiple deadlines and competing demands successfully.
  • Accomplishing organizational goals and working independently on assignments from beginning to end.
Physical Demands and Working Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
  • Work is generally performed in an office setting.
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • Frequently required to talk, hear; sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls; and reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to stand and walk.
  • The ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively, and exchange information accurately with all internal and external customers.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet.
  • Ability to appropriately handle stress and interact with others, including supervisors, coworkers, clients, and customers.
  • Light lifting (up to 25 pounds) is occasionally required.
  • Regular and consistent punctuality and attendance.
