Duties SummaryRepairs and overhauls a variety of medium and heavy construction equipment such as cranes, bulldozer, rollers, graders, loaders and power shovel as substantially a full-time assignment; and performs other related duties as required.There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Automotive Division in Hilo.Special Working Conditions: Ability to respond to emergencies to the baseyard from residence within 30 minutes of being called into work.Working Hours: Monday - Friday; 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.Examples of Duties

  • Diagnoses motor knocks, noises and other mechanical failures.
  • Disassembles diesel or gasoline engines.
  • Inspects, removes, repairs and replaces such parts as injection valves, cylinder heads, cylinder sleeves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, gaskets, etc.
  • Repairs and overhauls major units such as brake system, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axles, steering units, cooling system, etc.
  • Repairs various specialized mechanical parts of equipment such as crawler tracks and drives, winches, bulldozer blades, scoops, excavating and loading bucket chains, power take-off and control mechanisms.
  • Road tests equipment repaired.
  • Performs minor welding connection with repair work.
  • May perform repairs to street sweepers.
  • May supervise another mechanic or helpers.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsTraining and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • completion of an apprenticeship program involving repair of construction equipment (scan and attach a copy of your certificate of apprenticeship program to your application), or
  • four (4) years of automotive repair experience under a journeyman mechanic, of which
  • two (2) years shall have been in construction equipment repair work (examples include repair of cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, loaders, power shovels, etc.), and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai\'i Driver License (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver\'s license at time of hire), and
  • possession of a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding, which must be presented at the time of interview.
Notes:
  • As applicable to the position, possession of a valid Commercial Driver License (Class A or B) with the appropriate endorsements is required prior to the completion of probation. (The immediate vacancy with the Department of Public Works requires a Commercial Driver License Class A with N endorsement, prior to the completion of probation.)
  • Possession of a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner\'s Certificate is required prior to appointment.
