Job Title: Controls Systems Engineering Manager

Summary:
Lead the development of control systems for industrial machinery, including selecting suitable control hardware, generating schematics, fabricating control electronics, and developing machine code and user interfaces for vision systems, industrial motion controllers, IoT systems, PLC and PC based systems. Manage standardization effort of electrical and controls engineering design to streamline design and programming process using standard components and design strategies. Lead the controls team in the collaborative effort between controls and mechanical design as well as the manufacturing effort. Develop and ensure the use of engineering process standards within the controls engineering team. Principal Duties and Required Skills:
Controls Engineering Manager Duties:
Manage controls engineering workforce schedules for all active projects including delegation of electrical design work and programming work to control engineers and engineering interns.
Develop controls engineering standards of work and assist the engineering manager in development of organization wide standards of work.
Ensure all engineering projects and processes are in conformance with the organization's established policies and objectives.
Assist in initial design work to help the sales team properly quote time and hard costs for completion of controls portions of incoming work.
Implement and oversee JTA's code repository server; administrate server to assist engineers through training and troubleshooting issues.
Oversee hiring of future controls engineers to ensure their functional competence in the growth of the company.
Lead factory acceptance test (FAT) and site acceptance test (SAT) duties and oversee engineering staff during runoff testing.
Report on progress to management (aid in development of schedules and timelines for projects)
Implement and standardize components across JTA product line to aid in efficiency of production of the JTA controls engineering product.
Review electrical design work of other controls engineers and technicians to ensure quality and manufacturability to the JTA standards.
Control Engineering Duties:
Works with mechanical and process engineers, as well as customers to understand control system and machine requirements.
Selects suitable controls hardware within the constraints of cost, capability, and customer requirements.
Generates a complete control system schematic in SolidWorks Electrical.
Creates, tests and debugs industrial control software written in a variety of standard languages such as Ladder Logic, VB.NET, and C#, as well as hardware-specific languages such as Aero Basic.
Modifies pre-existing software after careful study of the new requirements and existing hardware, electronics, and existing software.
Designs and develops functional user interfaces using VB.NET, C#, or dedicated UI hardware and software, including Siemens and Allen Bradley platforms.
Documents all code for future review and revision.
Works with other engineers and writers to prepare customer ready documentation of software features.
Works and communicates with hardware original equipment manufacturers to interface with their provided application program interfaces.
Assists mechanical and electrical engineers with control system development issues.
Works one-on-one or in groups with customers to provide training and support.
Assists with the fabrication of control panels and enclosures.
Develop machine vision programs and strategies.
Assists with mechanical assembly.
Develop desktop software when CoTS solutions do not exist.
Develop plug-ins and interfaces to allow easy communication with minimally supported hardware.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Provide periodic feedback to direct reporting engineers and interns to help maintain or raise the quality of the workforce.
Provide disciplinary feedback as needed to take corrective action and ensure the expectations of team members are met.
Improve controls engineering team skills through one-on-one meetings and weekly training sessions.
Delegate controls design, detailing, testing, and manual generation work to control engineering staff as necessary. The duties and responsibilities as described above may be supplemented by other duties needed to help drive to our organization's Vision and Core Values.
Required Qualifications:
Ability to understand and create code in a variety of languages including VB.NET and Ladder Logic.
Experience with control system development on Siemens PLC platforms.
Ability to design and program effective and ergonomic user interfaces.
Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, production workers, customers, and vendors.
Highly motivated to adapt to situations requiring multi-disciplinary thinking.
Self-sufficient and independent work style with general supervision.
Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, controls engineering, robotics or equivalent.
Desired Qualifications:
1. 2+ years of engineering leadership experience is preferred.
2. Experience with control system development on Siemens motion control platforms, such as the 840D.
3. Experience with Allen Bradley PLC and motion control solutions.
4. Experience with multi-threaded desktop programming.
5. Knowledge of industrial control communications such as Profibus, ProfiNet, TCP/IP, Serial, and EtherCAT.
6. Knowledge of G code.
7. Experience with a variety of industrial controls vendors such as Siemens, Automation Direct, Aerotech, SMC, Keyence, Cognex, etc.
8. Some mechanical design background/understanding.
9. 2-5 years of experience with control systems.
10. Familiarity with laser systems and/or motion systems.
Language Ability:
Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
Math Ability:
Apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis.
Reasoning Ability:
Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
