Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent required, in addition to 1+ year of experience of working in a museum entomology collection, or college coursework in biology or entomology. Experience with data processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

BA/BS preferred. College background in biology, entomology, or museum studies. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Experience working with collection database management programs (e.g., MCZbase, GEOLocate) and web interface required. Knowledge of PC computers, including Microsoft Word and Excel in addition to demonstrated comfort with learning new software applications. Ideal candidate will show great attention to detail, be self-motivated, and have the ability to work as part of a team. Should be able to demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. Experience with butterfly and moth taxonomy and insect imaging systems and photo-stacking software is preferred.

Additional Information

This is a one-year term position from the date of hire.

Position Description

Job-specific responsibilities are:

  • Transcribes uncatalogued locality data from insect pin labels for butterfly and moth specimens into the museum-wide database (MCZbase) and applies barcode numbers.
  • Organizes specimens in the butterfly and moth collection, and integrates newly acquired specimens into the main collection.
  • Photographs locality labels of butterfly and moth specimens for subsequent transcription.
  • Makes routine identifications.
  • Compares data of cataloged records for accuracy and completeness, then corrects data as needed in consultation with the Curatorial Associate. Assists with creating a taxonomic authority list and georeferencing localities through the use of online taxonomic resources and the GeoLocate software tool.
  • Maintains order in the collection and performs other collection-related duties as required.
  • This position is 17.50 hours per week.

Job Summary

The Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) is seeking to hire a part-time Curatorial Assistant II in the Department of Entomology for a one-year term position. Reporting to Curatorial Associate in Entomology and Faculty Curator in Lepidoptera, this position supports a project to database and integrate a newly acquired collection of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera).
