Note: This position provides detention services in both the Kapolei and Honolulu locations. Therefore, this position requires a current and valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license to operate a motor vehicle.
Hours of Work - Rotating Shift: This position is required to perform duties on a rotating shift basis and/or to be scheduled outside of normal business hours to support a 24-hour, 7 days/week, year-round operation.
Test Information: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be required to pass an Attitudinal Test to be eligible for employment consideration. The Attitudinal Test is administered on O\'ahu. Candidates must report for the exam in person. We do not offer our exams online or out-of-state.

Summary of Duties
Assists the Detention Facility Superintendent in the direction and supervision of the various support and operational functions of the facility. Supervises and coordinates the day-to-day custody and care activities of a detention facility for juveniles; supervises the operational support services to complement the supervision of detainees. Serves in the absence of the Detention Facility Superintendent, and is subject to call in emergency situations during weekends, holidays and after work hours.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education Requirement: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university, preferably with a major in a behavioral or social science. Excess experience of the type and quality described below, or any administrative, professional, technical, or other responsible work which required a high degree of analytical skill may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
General Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of experience in providing direct services to children and youth. This must have involved the knowledge and its application in dealing with the behavior and attitudes of youth, counseling and guidance, casework or groupwork techniques, or rehabilitative techniques.
Specialized Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional counseling or other social services work experience in a criminal justice system (i.e., police, courts, corrections, or public/private rehabilitation agencies or organizations) which demonstrated the applicant\xe2\x80\x99s knowledge of the philosophy, principles, concepts and practices relating to the criminal justice system, rehabilitation or institutional programs. Such experience must have involved program development and evaluation or development of new and revised procedures.
Supervisory Aptitude:For the class, Deputy Detention Facility Superintendent, supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience is accepted. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
Allowable Substitutions:
Possession of a master\'s degree from an accredited university with specialization in sociology, psychology, criminology, penology, social work or other related behavioral science may be substituted for two (2) years of General Experience.
Successful completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in one of the fields described in (1) above may be substituted for two (2) years of General Experience and one (1) year of the Specialized Experience.
Testing Information:
1. Applications will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the minimum qualification requirements and public employment requirements. 2. Qualified applicants will be notified by email to schedule an Attitudinal Test. The Attitudinal Test will be administered in Honolulu, O`ahu only. Candidates must report for the exam in person. Due to the confidentiality of the test materials, the Attitudinal Test is not available online or administered out-of-state. 3. Only applicants who pass the Attitudinal Test will be eligible for employment consideration.
Selective Certification Requirement - Driver\'s License: Due to the driving duties of the position, applicants must possess a valid and unexpired driver\'s license to operate a motor vehicle.
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: In accordance with the PREA Federal law, the Hawai`i State Judiciary shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with detainees in juvenile facilities and lockups, with inmates detained in a prison or jail, or with residents of community confinement facilities who:
a. Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution; b. Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; c. Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in b above; or d. Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment, or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
