The Position
LOCATION AND HOURS OF WORK:
Hall of Justice, 1701 Farnam Street, Omaha, NE 68183 and Justice Center 1717 Farnam Street, Omaha, NE 68183. Hours generally Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, some weekend and/or evening availability may be necessary.
SALARY RANGE:
Benefits available and salary commensurate with experience and whether hiring is for a part time or full time position. The Douglas County Attorney\'s Office utilizes a defined step plan to determine initial salary and subsequent salary increases. QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree. A license to practice law in Nebraska. A minimum of three (3) years of experience working as a licensed attorney in the area of workers\' compensation but five (5) or more years is preferred. General civil litigation experience is also preferred, but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Must have experience in workers\' compensation court and handling all aspects of workers\' compensation matters. Preference will be given to candidates with an established record of handling cases independently and through resolution. Candidates should indicate in their resume and/or cover letter their experience with managing discovery, mediating or resolving cases, and hearing experience before the Workers\' Compensation Court.
Ability to read, understand and interpret legal documents. Excellent research and writing skills, time-management skills, and ability to understand and manage complex factual and legal issues. Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and decision making. Ability to independently research the law to analogize and distinguish precedent and apply the law to a factual scenario based on an evidentiary record. Skill in preparing legal opinions and orders; ability to prioritize work and carry out assigned projects to their completion; ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions; ability to handle information of a confidential and sensitive nature. Ability to understand and follow exacting verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively, in English, verbally and in writing. Must have experience using electronic legal resources to complete legal research; ability to utilize word processing skills to prepare work product.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, court personnel, other governmental offices and agencies, and the general public. Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under the guidance of the Douglas County Attorney or designee. This workers\' compensation Deputy will handle all aspects of workers\' compensation matters including but not limited to drafting responsive pleadings, evaluating compensability and valuation of cases, reviewing medical records; drafting and responding to discovery; taking depositions; attending hearings and trials; preparing written legal memoranda, drafting orders; responding to research requests via email; performing related duties and may also perform unrelated duties as assigned. For full time candidates, workers\' compensation will not constitute the entire work or case load. In addition to handling all aspects of workers\' compensation, job duties will include other activities related to the role of Deputy County Attorney in the Civil Division. These other job duties may include, but are not limited to: contract review and drafting, inheritance tax review, interpreting statutes related to public entities and providing legal advice to County Departments, responding to public records requests, and representing Douglas County and its departments in civil lawsuits in state and federal courts. Candidates will have these additional job duties assigned by the County Attorney or designee.

Work is generally performed indoors in an office setting. Noise level is usually moderate. Hours of work are generally standard day-shift hours however work hours may occasionally include weekend, emergency call-in and additional hours. Incumbents may encounter uncooperative or irate persons while performing duties.
Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of sitting and standing, frequent walking, and occasional balancing, kneeling, bending, and reaching. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and carry supplies, equipment and documents weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
