General Summary of Position
Ensures the Radiation Safety Program provisions are implemented in accordance with all federal, state, local and the organization\'s mission, vision, policies and procedures. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital\'s philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs general surveillance of Radiation Safety activities including personnel, facility and environmental monitoring.
  • Provides technical support to all departments and work areas using radioactive materials and radiation producing machines/equipment, throughout the hospital.
  • Provides consultation support to personnel working with or responsible for practices involving exposure to ionizing radiation, as well as patients and family members as applicable.
  • Provides Radiation Safety education and training to all organizational Radiation Workers including Radiation Technicians, Nurses Physicians and Residents.
  • Establishes management process and maintains current the annual Physics Testing Program for all organizational X-Ray machines, Mammography, and other imaging units to ensure compliance with District of Columbia and FDA regulatory requirements. Makes records available for review upon request.
  • Provides administrative and technical support to Radiation Safety Officer and Radiation Safety Committee to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Acts as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in the absence of the organizational designated RSO.
  • Responds immediately and establishes control at incidents/occurrences involving radiation hazards. Conducts occurrence and incident investigations to identify root cause and prepare written reports detailing synopsis, sequence of events, conclusion and recommendations for preventing recurrence. Submits reports to RSO and Radiation Safety Committee for review and approval. Tracks approved recommendations to closure as applicable.
  • As delegated by the organizational RSO, represents RSO in meetings, policy reviews sessions, Focus Teams and other assignments to provide support and consultation as appropriate to ensure Radiation Safety Program effectiveness.
  • Supports organizational RSO during all internal, state, federal and independent audits/inspections to ensure successful result.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Master\'s degree from an accredited college or university in Health Physics, Medical Physics, or related field required or
Experience
  • 3-4 years Progressively more responsible positions related experience in the management of radiation safety operations with radioactive materials including waste management in the clinical setting. required and
  • 5-7 years Experience in medical health physics to include: conducting ionizing radiation surveys and measurements; preparing written reports of radiation protection activities; analyzing samples for radioactivity; personnel dosimetry - radiation badges; shipment of radioactive materials; calibration and maintenance of instruments used during routine radiation safety activities; inspection of X-ray units; securing and controlling radioactive material; use of administrative controls to ensure safety in the administration of byproduct material; use of procedures to prevent or minimize radioactive contamination and implementation of proper decontamination procedures; use of emergency response procedures to control byproduct material; and disposal of byproduct material; required or
  • Experience and knowledge in managing health physics practices in nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology, facilities providing full range of diagnostic and/or therapeutic services; required and
  • Knowledge and experience in diagnostic medical physics with emphasis in the use of x-rays. required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Training and experience criteria as outlined in subpart J, Part 35, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations for a Radiation Safety Officer. required and
  • Medical Physics Certification - MPC Certification by the American Board of Health Physics, preferred or
  • approval by a District of Columbia agency to perform X-ray machine inspections preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent leadership, management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of current and proposed regulations including: Title 10 Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR); Title 40 of Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR); Title 49 of Code of Federal Regulations, and District of Columbia Regulatory Agency (DCRA).
