Job Description


SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSEThe Deputy Sheriff is a journey-level classification. Persons in this classification may work alone, with a partner, or as part of a unit.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSDuties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Processes business and emergency calls and prepares crime and miscellaneous reports on an as-needed basis.
  • Exercises authority consistent with the obligations imposed by the oath of office. Promptly obeys legitimate orders.
  • Coordinates efforts with those of other members of the department so that teamwork may ensure continuity of purpose and achievement of police objectives.
  • Communicates to superiors and to fellow officers all information obtained in the jail, which is pertinent to the achievement of corrections objectives.
  • Acquires and records information concerning events that have taken place since the last tour of duty.
  • Records activities during the tour of duty as required.
  • Maintains weapons and equipment in a functional, presentable condition.
  • Accountable for the securing, receipt, and proper transporting of all evidence and property coming into custody.
  • Confers with prosecutors and testifies in court on any manner arising from police business.
  • Cooperates and coordinates with other law enforcement agencies, correctional institutions, and the courts.
  • Conducts a thorough investigation of all offenses and incidents within the area of assignment. Collects evidence and records information to aid in identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders and the recovery of property.
  • Remains alert to conditions that foster, cause or indicate crime criminal activity. Takes preventive action to correct such conditions. Informs supervisors as soon as the situation permits.
  • Responds to situations brought to the officer\'s attention while during patrol or when assigned by radio.
  • Renders first aid, when qualified, to persons who are seriously ill or injured. Assists persons needing emergency services.
  • Remains in the assigned area throughout the tour of duty except when a law enforcement emergency necessitates a temporary absence or when the sergeant or supervisor has authorized a temporary absence.
  • Remains alert for all nuisances, impediments, obstructions, defects, or other conditions that might endanger or hinder the safety, health, or convenience of the public, or that contribute to disorder.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest trends, techniques, and legal developments in law enforcement.
  • Maintains knowledge of local, state, and federal programs, resources, and services available to the public.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Category I, II, III
  • Must maintain a valid Nevada driver\'s license
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAn employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:Knowledge
  • Knowledge of basic modern law enforcement principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the care, protection, and appropriate use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of all streets and ways of the county.
  • Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
  • Working knowledge of business correspondence formats, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.
  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.
Skills
  • Demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills especially in dealing with the public.
  • Preparing clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding and carrying out complex written and oral communications.
  • Managing time effectively.
  • Typing 40 words per minute accurately.
  • Applying basic accounting concepts. Making and verifying arithmetical computations with accuracy and speed.

Physical Demands and Working EnvironmentAn employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
  • Strength, stamina, and endurance to adjust to changes in shift assignments or to work well beyond an eight-hour shift; strength and stamina to sit for prolonged periods of time in a patrol vehicle and to enter and exit the vehicle quickly frequently.
  • Strength, stamina, coordination, and balance to stand and walk for long periods, to walk and run on uneven surfaces, bend, reach, and conduct inspections, climb ladders, fences, and other obstacles and to run in pursuit of other individuals; strength, stamina, and coordination to physically restrain uncooperative and violent individuals.
  • Strength and coordination to drive vehicles in high speed pursuit without endangering others; strength to move the weight of an inert or resisting human body, and to carry equipment and supplies that occasionally involve lifting or moving more than 100 pounds; stamina to be able to maintain physical exertion under stress.
  • Ability to remain alert in a confined space for extended periods; vision to discern details in low light; hearing to identify tone signals and perceive conversation and activities through obstacles; coordination, vision, and strength for the accurate use of firearms; coordination, vision, and dexterity for use of computer terminals; ability to deal emotionally with exposure to the consequences of acts of violence perpetrated against others.
  • Shift work with periodic changes. Frequently works alone in isolated areas and occasionally in confined spaces.
  • Incumbents must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and move from indoor to outdoor environments.
  • Incumbents are frequently subjected to the stress of dealing with detainees, persons under the influence of alcohol and drugs, emotional individuals, and resistive and combative persons.
  • Incumbents may be personally subjected to the stress of exposure to dangerous persons and circumstances including dead, injured, and sick individuals and to individuals with communicable diseases.
  • Position is exposed to the noise of firearms discharge often in close proximity.
