The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is seeking a Director of Financial Operations. CTY is a nonprofit dedicated to identifying and developing the talents of academically advanced K-12 students around the world. The Director of Financial Operations leads and directs the operations of the organizations financial planning and analysis, and accounting teams. This position ensures that CTY\'s finance team adheres to Johns Hopkins controls, policies, and procedures and also provides direction and resolution regarding difficult and complex issues, working closely with the Sr. Director of Finance & Administration and CTY\'s senior leadership team. The Director of Financial Operations is also a liaison to JHUs Controllers Office and the Office of Planning and Budget, as well as to other areas of University Administration as needed.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accuracy and timeliness of all financial statements and financial analysis.
  • Oversees and ensure the timely and accurate preparation, delivery, and analysis of financial statements, budgets, and forecasts for CTY. Manages the annual budget development process with the senior leadership and program management teams, recommending ways to reduce costs and enhance revenues.
  • Performs complex statistical, cost, and financial analysis of financial reports and data, and prepares subsequent narrative analysis for management.
  • Collaborates with CTYs departments to improve financial effectiveness and achieve financial targets.
  • Partners with JHU Finance in the areas of international business services, tax, treasury, and sponsored finance.
  • In coordination with JHU Purchasing and the Office of General Counsel, negotiates all significant contracts on behalf of CTY.
  • Directly and indirectly supervises a team of finance professionals.
Financial Reporting, Analysis & Management
  • Oversees year-end financial transactions, reconciliations, and reporting. Provides analyses and explanations of variances to budget to CTY leadership on a monthly basis.
  • Develops and maintains financial analysis and reports for leadership team. Develops and maintains financial reporting in various systems and dashboards (e.g. Tableau).
  • Leads the audit process and serves as a liaison with JHU and third-party auditors to ensure the completion of audits and tax returns within tight reporting deadlines. Lead process of preparing financial statements.
  • Implements/maintains efficient financial controls to ensure accurate and timely information, meet all GAAP accounting standards, ensure compliance with approved policies and procedures.
  • Partners with senior leadership and CTY departments to develop, implement, oversee and continuously refine an effective infrastructure of systems and processes to support the day-to-day financial operations and growth objectives of the organization.

Revenue / Budget Oversight & Management
  • Responsible for producing, loading, and reconciling CTYs annual budget and budget projections. Produces any required analysis/reporting for CTY and university leadership for the quarterly and annual budget reporting process.
  • Manages and maintains CTYs compensation budget model.
  • Monitors competitive landscape and draft annual tuition rates for all courses as well as associated fees.
  • Along with Sr. Director of Finance & Administration, and in partnership with IT as needed, will lead implementation of new budget system during FY2024.
  • Maintains close connection to program departments to ensure that all factors and data are considered for annual budget. Recommends budget adjustments, and other cost improvement measures, to leadership.
  • Assists in capital planning and management as needed.
  • Acts as liaison to CTYs other departments to clarify and resolve issues.
Program Planning & Development
  • Assists the Executive Director and Sr. Director of Finance & Administration with planning and development of new programs and revenue streams.
  • Supports business development activities of the Hopkins enterprise to develop mutually beneficial clinical and operational programs.
  • Performs programmatic analysis, including productivity and fiscal performance, the product of which is incorporated into short and long range financial and operational planning.
  • Reviews costs and performs cost benefit analysis related to projects and/or programs.
Administrative & Operational Leadership
  • The Director of Financial Operations reports to CTYs Senior Director of Finance and Administration. The Director of Financial Operations is a key member of the CTY\'s management team providing leadership and direction on a variety of departmental topics. The individual in this role will directly and indirectly supervise a team of individuals in the areas of accounting and financial management and analysis.
  • Manages subordinate supervisors and accounting staff and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the financial planning, accounting, collections & payment application, accounts payable, and purchasing teams.
  • Conducts performance evaluations, partners with HR and leadership to run the hiring process for new finance team staff, leads the training and onboarding of new finance staff, and collaborates with HR to address employee relations matters in a timely fashion.
  • Sets clear performance expectations, provides feedback to others, recommends training and coaching when appropriate, ensures recognition for results, and takes corrective action to resolve performance problems as appropriate.
  • With the Sr. Director for Finance & Administration, develops, implements, and enforces financial policies, processes, and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in business, finance, or another related field.
  • Seven years progressively responsible professional level experience, including 2 years supervisory experience.
  • Additional education may take the place of some experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master\'s Degree in related field.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong familiarity with accounting practices and software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Effective leadership, collaborative team building, and decision-making skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of Johns Hopkins financial accounting systems preferred, but not required.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
