About this position

The ED Technician assists the care team to give our customers and their families unmatched quality care throughout the life span including neonates, infants, pediatrics, young adult, adult and older adults. The focus is on collaborative, supportive and delegated nursing assistant functions as described in standards and competencies specific to the scope of practice described by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and NA certification regulations. The ED Technician receives direction and collaborates with the customer care team to meet the defined goals of the customer, shift, department and organization. Communication with the health care team related to progress, concerns, questions or problems that arise are an essential element of the role.

The Lead ED Tech is an experienced ED Tech who acts as a leader and mentor in collaboration with other nursing leaders and disciplines to engage staff in pursuing North Memorial\'s mission, vision and values. The Lead ED Tech supports departmental best practices when assuming responsibity for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating customer care activities delegated by the Nurse manager and or Department Supervisor.

Unit based skills list outlines specific expectations including technical procedures with competency assessment/validation.

What we\'ll expect from you

Accountabilities:

  • Demonstrates supportive, comforting and compassionate care to customer and families.
  • Monitors customer\'s experience of care and safety through observation and data collection.
  • Reports customer responses related to interventions to RN or Emergency Physician.
  • Performs treatments, technical procedures as required and within the defined scope of practice or validated competency.
  • Collaborates with customer care team, customers, families, peers and other care providers to provide continuity of customer care.
  • Recognizes emergent situations and responds promptly and effectively.
  • Recognizes potential ethical dilemmas and demonstrates the ability to advocate for customers, families, co-workers and others in collaboration with the RN/physician.
  • Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of the care being provided to the customer.
  • Evaluates personal practice in relation to expectations of the role and relevant statutes and regulations.
  • Understands operation and set up of equipment used in the ED.
  • Responsible for information received through meetings and staff communication system.
  • Participates in activities to promote quality improvement, share accountability and decision-making.
  • Interacts with and contributes to the development of peers and other health care providers as co-workers.
  • Contributes to the organizational financial efficiency by working within identified budget parameters, following cost containment guidelines and contributing feedback to the budget process.
  • The following applies to ED Technician Lead:
  • Assuring daily/weekly checks of equipment are completed
  • Assuring daily/weekly cleaning of equipment is completed
  • Assuring stocking of stabilization rooms is completed in a timely manner
  • Involvement in STAB room training for both EDT\'s and RN\'s
  • Maintains daily quality control items for POCT/Lab
  • Troubleshoots supply and equipment issues
  • Champions change to the EDT team
  • Promotes process improvement
  • Seeks out cost savings
  • Partners with leadership on new initiatives, processes, and education
  • Other duties as delegated by charge nurse and leadership
  • Acts as a resource for other EDT\'s
  • The folowing applies to ED Technician and ED Technican Lead:
  • Accepts other duties as assigned to promote the accomplishment of organizational goals.
  • The team member is accountable to demonstrate proficiency for the skills outlined in the appropriate position skills list.
  • The team member is accountable to maintain skill proficiency, including improvement where deemed necessary, and upgrading any additional or new skills on the appropriate position skills list.
Compliance
  • Recognizes and complies with legal regulatory, accrediting and procedural requirements related to area of responsibility.
  • Understands and follows principles and standards as outlined in North Memorial\'s Corporate Code of Conduct.
  • Protects customer and team member privacy and only accesses customer and/or team member related information as needed to perform job duties.
  • Reports violations or areas of concern to supervisor or Corporate Compliance Officer via established methods of communication.

Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Successful completion of a national or State of Minnesota administered certification exam for emergency medical technicians required.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Experience
  • ED Technician - Current EMT certification or one year previous ED experience.
  • ED Technician Lead - 5 years of recent ED experience or EMT experience required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in oral and written English sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position required.
  • Skill in basic computer operations.
Licensure/Certification(s) Mandatory
  • EMT Certification - NMH Standard
  • BLS certification - NMH Standard
Licensure/Certification(s) Mandatory where Applicable

Licensure/Certification(s) Preferred

Hours per two week pay period: 70

Shift: Day/Night 12 hours

Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd Weekend

Work Group: 113 Service Workers

Call Requirement: None
