JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for an Engineering Acoustics Department Head to join our Acoustics Division of the Fluids Dynamics and Acoustics Office (FDAO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL\xe2\x80\x99s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). The Engineering Acoustics Department is currently comprised of seven research faculty and engineers with research focus in acoustic materials, vibration and sensing. Through its research, the Department serves both the mission of the ARL as a Navy sponsored University Affiliated Research Center and the Land Grant mission of the University.

The Acoustic Division specializes in finite element (FE) and boundary element (BE) modeling of structures and fluids, analytic and numerical modeling and measurement of hydrodynamic and aerodynamic pressures, analysis and experimentation involving fluid-excited structural-acoustic and materials systems, structural modal analysis and dynamics, and sound power measurements, including sound directivity. Once vibration sources are quantified (either by simulations, measurements or analysis) expertise is in-place to mitigate shock and vibration with a wide variety of technologies.

The Engineering Acoustics Department Head provides overall leadership, direction, and oversight for programs and research activity across these advanced technology areas and is also responsible for the recruitment, professional development, and promotion in rank of current and future generations of the Department faculty and staff.

You Will:

Cultivate business opportunities related to the overall mission of the Department and organizational leadership

Develop and execute the strategic vision, goals, and plans of the Department in concert with other units within the Division, FDAO, and ARL

Develop, perform and oversee research in the area of vibrations and acoustics for a wide range of possible applications, including marine vehicles, air vehicles, and renewable and non-renewable energy production

Collaborate with project managers to ensure timely delivery of quality technical work by Department staff; and personnel management, including recruitment, development, and retention of Department personnel

Prepare and review proposals, technical reports, status report and other programmatic and administrate documents

Lead a technically strong and dynamic group of personnel

This position can be filled as a Level 3, 4, or 5, depending on your education and experience. Typical requirements include a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, Master\xe2\x80\x99s or Doctorate Degree preferred; 5+ years related experience for a Level 3. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher-level positions.

Required skills/experience areas include:

Demonstrate the capability to set and meet goals and objectives

Past success in the development of hydro-acoustic models/simulation techniques and the execution of hydro-acoustic experiments

Past success with technical leadership in marine systems; multiple computing languages, analysis tools, simulations and measurements in the field of engineering acoustics

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

Success in an environment, where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective

Ability to express yourself and ideas successfully to others in order to provide understanding

Possession of a Secret security clearance

Previous success with collaborations in a diverse, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture

Your working location will be on-site, located in State College. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
