Fall Internship Avian Husbandry / Seabird Research

Summary:The intern will assist with the day-to-day support of various ongoing seabird and laboratory research as well as assist with seabird and waterfowl husbandry tasks. Applicants should exhibit a strong interest in seabirds and marine ecology. This position involves a combination of computer, laboratory, some fieldwork as well as assisting with the care and maintenance of ASLC\xe2\x80\x99s avian collections. Candidates with previous environmental science, seabird identification, laboratory, or husbandry experience are preferred. Applicants should be comfortable with conducting surveys on boats and being outside in variable conditions. Under the guidance of research and avian staff, the intern will be trained and expected to perform the essential duties.Education / Experience:Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree, or progress towards a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a science related field is preferred. Experience with seabird identification is preferred but not required. Experience with seabird and / or waterfowl handling is preferred but not required.Essential Duties:Research:

  • Record weather and observations during vessel-based seabird surveys
  • Assist with weekly shore-based surveys
  • Maintain computer records and data
  • Assist with bioassay laboratory work as needed
  • Assist with organizing and inventorying laboratory and field supplies
  • Assists Research Tech II with other projects as needed
Avian Husbandry:
  • Perform animal diet preparations and routine cleaning of seabird exhibits, waterfowl enclosures and work areas
  • Record observations and note health and condition of the collection birds
  • Record food consumption and maintain computer records and data
  • Lead Keeper chats and tours
  • Assist the avian staff in other current research projects and data collection
Other:
  • Work on a vessel or in an outdoor exhibit with moderate to strenuous physical activity, lift up to 50 lbs. and be in cold/wet/snowy weather
  • Maintains regular communication with Research Tech II
  • Assist with other duties relating to ASLC goals and mission statement as required
Other Skills and Abilities:Ability to work independently with excellent organizational and time management skills. Proficient computer skills, including basic Microsoft applications, specifically Excel, are preferred.Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.   • Ability to swim; see and hear; move about; stoop, kneel, crouch and sit; use arms and hands; handle objects, tools, and controls. Ability to lift and move 50 pounds.
  • Experience working on small vessels is beneficial.
