Field Technician

to join our growing team. This is a field-based position that operates through our Tampa office to serve local area public clients.
AEI is

seeking an experienced candidate for this position

, who has worked in the field as a survey technician (road and chain person/instrument person) or utility locate technician. An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled activities to provide data to guide engineering design and/or facilitate construction and excavation activities. Job duties may include such things as working with survey crews, carrying out a range of surveying assignments, or working independently to locate and mark existing underground infrastructure to avoid impacts during excavation.
Field Technicians in this class are expected to exercise considerable initiative in moving efficiently through the day's work assignments. Also, considerable independent judgment must be used, as the accuracy of the data collected in the field depends heavily on how the readings are interpreted.
The candidate must be able to read and interpret electronic quarter section and plat maps to identify areas likely to have utility lines in advance of going in the field. This position will assist with maintaining records and preparing reports as directed by field crew leader or project manager.
The major skills needed are quality assurance, accuracy, thoroughness, willingness to cross-train, and ability to follow instructions.

The ability to pass a background check and a valid current driver's license with a clean driving record is essential.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES


Operates various electronic devices designed to locate underground utilities Able to operate pneumatic air tools such as jackhammer and pogo tamper. Reads and interprets utility records, as built and survey drawings and highway design plans Distinguishes colors to mark utilities with the designated color for the corresponding utility. Uses common hand tools such as a hammer or screwdriver to open various utility appurtenances Carries out a range of surveying assignments while learning the methods of survey data collection Maintains survey equipment and survey vehicle inventory and other records Assists Party Chief as directed to complete surveys Works in a safe manner and obeys all safety regulations Produces accurate reports and forms including vehicle mileage reports, daily time sheets, tracking forms, work completion documents, etc. Interacts with contractors, coworkers, and the general public to establish and maintain effective working relationships Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard Florida Driver's License to complete locating assignments and respond to emergencies Operates a laptop PC in order to obtain information regarding excavation locations and to input status of work performed Operated Trimble survey equipment and other basic survey field equipment Prepares or updates maps to make corrections for specific plats Uses appropriate protective gear when operating in the field, such as gloves when marking utility lines, safety vests for visibility, etc. Uses traffic cones to facilitate the marking of utilities located in the road Works in a variety of hazardous environments such as construction sites and traffic rights-of-way while performing locate assignments Able to create legible field sketches, simple mathematics, and basic field measurements Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


High School Diploma or GED required Valid current driver's license At least 2 years of experience locating underground utilities or assisting with survey field operations (both rodman and instrument person will be considered) Ability to lift 50 pounds, walk over different types of terrain, and work in all weather conditions Is a process-oriented team player who is able to work independently Ability to accurately follow directions, including timekeeping records Drug screening, background, and driver's license checks are required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


Good technical skills Trustworthy, reliable, methodical, consistent, and problem solver Ability to perform some equipment maintenance tasks is a plus Associate's degree preferred Current Commercial Driver's License is a plus Experience training junior technicians OSHA Certifications Willing to work occasional evenings/weekends
