What is a Finance Director?

The Finance Director is responsible for all aspects of financial management, including nonprofit (fund) accounting, financial reporting, development of internal control policies and procedures, and budget and forecast preparation. This position is responsible for monitoring operating cash-flow, payroll administration, managing relationships with external auditor, tax advisor, bank/lender, and insurance brokers, overseeing day-to-day accounts payable and grants receivable activities, and leading departmental staff. The Finance Director works directly with the Executive Director and Department Directors to accomplish the agency\xe2\x80\x99s financial goals. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Director will be involved in strategic planning and core values, focus and 10 year goal initiative, as well as planning for Vail Place\xe2\x80\x99s growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this position. These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

  • Leads the overall production, interpretation, and presentation of quarterly, annual, project, and ad hoc financial reporting. Develops and maintains a reporting system that ensures proper disclosure and accountability for all financial activities.
  • Develops internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures for activities such as contributions and cash receipts, billing services, cash disbursements, banking, payroll, credit, and accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Coordinates and directs financial planning, budgeting, procurements, and investment activities for the agency.
  • Oversees cash flow management through use of cash receipts and cash disbursements and maintains an adequate cash balance to meet financial obligations.
  • Payroll administration and payroll tax reporting, and administration of retirement plan and unemployment insurance.
  • Coordinates and directs the annual financial audit preparation, tax preparation and filings. Monitor banking and treasury strategies to attain financial goals. Oversee business insurance to mitigate risk through precautions, planning and coverage.
  • Tracks restricted and unrestricted funds to ensure their appropriate use.
  • Serves as the staff liaison to and communicates the agency\xe2\x80\x99s financial position to the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee.
Minimum Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree in accounting or related field required.
  • Minimum five years\xe2\x80\x99 relative work experience as a Director of Finance, CFO, Controller, Accounting Manager, or equivalent work.
  • Experience within a non-profit environment is required.
  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service skills.
  • Ability to approach workload with positive energy and enthusiasm.
  • Must be organized and able to process large amounts of information.
  • Passion for working with mission oriented non-profit organizations.

Salary and Benefits

Salary range $85,000 to $95,000, Depending on Qualifications. Full Benefits Package including medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D, long term disability, matched 401K. Paid time off in Year 1 includes generous vacation & sick/safe time, plus 3 personal days and 13 paid holidays.
