The City of Raleigh Fire Department is seeking qualified applicants for full-time instructor positions within our Professional Development Division. The ability to plan, direct, and oversee multiple disciplines of training for the department and to teach courses related to said field is a critical quality for success. Qualified candidates must be N.C. Qualified Instructors with teaching experience.

Expertise in quality customer service is essential. Qualified candidates will possess excellent computer skills; demonstrate evidence of a career that includes flexibility and willingness to change; be open-minded, fair, and possess the ability to see multiple perspectives; be willing to take and manage risks and accept responsibility for professional and personal growth.

This position will require availability to teach classes days, evenings, and weekends, on and off campus.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruct Fire and Emergency Rescue Training courses as required.
  • Provide general classroom and practical instruction.
  • Incorporate latest instructional technologies in course delivery and utilize interactive learning technologies to engage students in the teaching and learning process.
  • Assist other instructors as needed with class instruction.
  • Assist other instructors in delivery of practical exercises.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend revisions to training standards and requirements to ensure compliance with the highest State and Federal standards.
  • Support operations of Recruit Academies.
  • Research and determine the equipment needs of upcoming courses.
  • Register classes and process required paperwork for classes.
  • Answer questions regarding certification from students.
  • Be responsible for professional development and maintaining professional competence.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and others.
  • Assist conducting class audits to ensure RFD/OSFM class delivery compliance.
  • Assist with OSFM audit and accreditation process to ensure RFD\'s Delivery Agency status.
  • Source, manufacture and or develop training props used to enhance course delivery.
  • Assist with specification and development for new equipment.
Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience
Bachelor\'s Degree in education, organizational development or directly related field and five years of training and development experience.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications
  • Valid North Carolina Driver\'s License Class C
N.C. Qualified Fire Instructor in one or more of the areas listed:
  • NC Firefighter Level I & II
  • Rapid Intervention Crew
  • Driver/Operator & Emergency Vehicle Driver
  • Live Burn (NFPA 1403)
  • Fire Officer I & II
  • Instructor I & II
  • Hazmat Level I Responder
  • Technical Rescue
  • Vehicle Extrication
  • Trench Rescue
  • Confined Space Rescue
  • Machine/agriculture
  • Structural Collapse
  • Wilderness
  • Water
Additional Information

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of organization and management.
  • Principles of program and course design.
  • Principles of instructional methodologies and pedagogy.
  • Specific program/courses and subject matter related to the assigned program/concentration and departmental activities.
  • Rules and regulations for Local, State, and Federal training requirements as well as the certification processes to include reciprocity for Pro-Board and IFSAC (International Fire Standards and Certification Board) situations.
  • Federal & State OSHA training and General Industry accepted work practices
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Interpret and apply RFD\'s policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Operate computer software with focus on Microsoft Office to be used in lesson plan development and classroom instruction.
