Job Description


JOB FUNCTION: To protect life and property through fire control and extinguishment, rescue operations, fire prevention and providing emergency medical services (EMS). Other functions may include but are not limited to administrative report writing, records management, training and education. Wages:
Firefighter/EMT: $51,216-$68,298
Firefighter/Paramedic: $59,947-$78,752

Fulltime position, 53 hours per week. 24/48 Schedule with 2920 Annual Hours.

The successful candidate will be required to pass a background check, pre-employment physical, drug screening and physical agility assessments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position but dependent upon the level of skill, ability, and experience of the individual. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Ability to perform all job duties safely and in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, policies and training.
Respond to fire and EMS incidents in a safe and timely manner.

Perform firefighting and fire ground operations including but not limited to, driving apparatus, pump operations, suppression, containment, ventilation, salvage and overhaul.

Perform emergency rescue activities including operating extrication tools, installation of cribbing and stabilization devices.

Perform direct patient care in compliance with established medical protocols and standards of care; knowledge of EMS equipment, supplies and vehicles.

Assess and coordinate resources and personnel to facilitate safety, quality care, triage, and transportation of all patients.

Conduct fire prevention education, commercial fire inspections and site preplanning.

Attend departmental meetings , training sessions, and other meetings as necessary.

Participate in public information and relation events.

Perform minor repair, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and facility. * Knowledge of OSHA, National Incident Management System (NIMS), and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) standards of care.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Entry Requirements and Skills:

High school diploma or GED equivalent certification. * Current EMT certification issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Paramedic certification preferred.
  • Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Iowa Driver\'s License (with no restrictions) and good driving record for the past three (3) years. A Class B CDL is required or shall obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

Current BLS and ACLS certifications supported by the American Heart Association.

Must maintain a minimum of 24 hrs of continuing firefighter education per calendar year as set forth by the department.

Must complete a physical agility test annually as set forth by the department.

Must complete a pre-employment physical to include a pulmonary function test and drug screening.

Physical Requirements/Essential Functions:
  • Potential exposure to noise, sight limiting events, bloodborne pathogens and other communicable diseases, gasses, chemicals and other hazardous materials, be at events where the use of self-contained breathing apparatus is used, and work in close quarters in excavation sites, or other sites of limited mobility.
  • Activities can include sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, crawling, and reaching; each activity dependent on response type.
  • Some activities will include lifting more than 50 lbs.
  • Hours could be long and unpredictable.

  • Write, read and have the ability to communicate effectively in the English language, use proper grammar, tense, math functions and convey it in written or oral form.
  • Ability to use computers for financial, spreadsheet, presentation and word processing needs of the department.
  • Knowledge of the geography, fire districts, neighboring communities, street addresses and locations, and sites of principal structures within the service area.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain long-term relationships allowing interaction with others associated with the City of Norwalk.
