Job Description


Job Responsibilities

This employee will be responsible for leading, supervising, and providing administrative support to the hatchery operations at the Dennis Wildlife Center (DWC) and satellite Bayless Hatchery.
Job Duties Include:

  • Regulating and supervising all activities which pertain to the culture and harvest of fish at the DWC and Bayless Hatchery.
  • Implementing and carrying out all duties necessary to ensure that fish production meets the annual production goals assigned by the Hatchery Coordinator.
  • Coordinating manpower and equipment needs to insure successful broodstock collection, spawning, hatching, pond stocking, management, harvest, transportation and stocking of hatchery products to the state\'s public waters.
  • Supervising the maintenance of facilities, equipment, grounds, and outbuildings assigned to hatchery operations at the DWC and Bayless Hatchery.
  • Performing all duties necessary to ensure the facilities, grounds, ponds, office, work buildings, personal residences and all other associated structures are maintained in a manner that will ensure maximum service, efficiency and aesthetic value.
  • Being on-call 24 hours/day.
  • Supervising employees on a daily basis.
  • Planning and implementing research activities at DWC which may improve production or stocking efficiency of designated fish species.
  • Where possible, pursuing outside funding to support research activities.
  • At the Hatchery Coordinator\'s request, coordinating staff to provide assistance to other State hatcheries, regional staff, research projects, and coordinating outreach activities including organizing fisheries-related events, stocking and hauling for DNR partners, and meeting with groups to promote SCDNR and the fish hatchery program.
  • Maintaining, completing, and submitting all necessary records and reports when necessary.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

A master\'s degree in biology, chemistry or wildlife management and two (2) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs; or a bachelor\'s degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and four (4) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with striped bass culture and/or warm water aquaculture and fish husbandry. Ability to work independently in the field and in adverse weather; safely operate small boats; collect, enter, and manage data reliably; ability to perform some heavy physical labor. Familiarity with aquatic resource sampling tools (nets, electrofishing gear, water quality meters and test kits). Ability to swim and be comfortable working in and around water.
