SUMMARY:
Freight Operators perform a series of important tasks in warehouse facilities, marine terminals and barge vessels. This position is highly active and requires somebody who enjoys hard work, problem solving, and ever-changing situations. Freight Operators can often have the opportunity to travel outside of their home port to assist other Service Centers. This is a full-time position with opportunities for overtime. Safety is Lynden\xe2\x80\x99s first responsibility to our employees and our customers. This position is a safety-sensitive position and the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner is required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Freight Operations l
Secures, unloads and loads breakbulk and less-than container load (LCL) freight with a variety of equipment including banding, dunnage, lumber, binders and chains. This position usually operates in a marine or warehouse facility. Operates a warehouse forklift. Supports operations by working on the deck of the barge to set and pull cones, secure containers and other equipment to the deck of the barge and assist operators as needed. Generally involved with the process of receiving and distributing freight to and from customers at the working facility. Assist in the maintenance of company property and general facility housekeeping duties.
Freight Operations II
All the responsibilities of a Freight Operations I. Is certified to operating a forklift up to 52t in a marine terminal. Additionally, employees can qualify by having a Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements and possess the ability to efficiently unload and load their truck in a marine terminal; this includes stacking containers in the yard safely and efficiently. This position requires 1-2 years of freight operations experience.
Freight Operations lll
All the responsibilities of a Freight Operations I \xe2\x80\x93 ll. Is certified to operate a forklift up to 52t on the deck of a barge. Qualified as a barge master and understands the rules for stowing and securement of freight and equipment on a barge. Assists in the training and development of a Freight Operations I and II. In many ports a CDL is required as well.
Freight Operations lV
All the responsibilities of a Freight Operations I \xe2\x80\x93 III. Highly qualified with an advanced level of experience operating friction cranes on land and on barges. This position actively travels for crane work on and off the deck of a barge.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position; employee customarily works at least 40 hours/week on a planned continuous basis due to barge schedules and customer requirements. Employees must be able to work flexible hours. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities required. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent, one-to-three months of work-related experience and/or training in general freight operations. Experience in the transportation industry is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as bills of ladings, tariffs, delivery receipts, military documents, procedure manuals, employee and safety manuals, and routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and clearly with customers, vendors, managers, and other employees. Strong communication skills both verbally and in written form.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
