The City and Borough of Juneau\'s Parks & Recreation Youth Sports program is oriented toward providing a healthy recreational and social learning experience for children. Fun and sportsmanship are emphasized rather than competitive attitudes. Our team seeks to provide the best possible experience for children in our programs.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for energetic people to referee our youth program\'s games. Our programming includes indoor and outdoor soccer, youth basketball, and youth volleyball. The ideal candidate would have knowledge of how a game flows, the basic rules that control a game, and the ability to make decisions and stand by them. They should be punctual and have a solid understanding of timekeeping. Our referees are typically players who want to help younger players learn how to play their sport.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position typically works Saturdays, 10am-3pm at various fields or gyms, with the occasional weeknight game or Start Smart session.

Typical Responsibilities

This position will be responsible to:

  • referee youth sports programs: indoor and outdoor soccer or youth basketball or youth volleyball;
  • help Recreation Coordinator with the Start Smart Sports program;
  • keep score for older youth age divisions;
  • keep time during games;
  • demonstrate good customer service skills.
Youth sports games officials are responsible for ensuring that the players follow the rules of the game. They review the rules and regulations to ensure the game is conducted properly. Youth Games Officials ensure the safety of all participants by watching for unsafe behavior; enforcing league rules; and stopping play when behavior of the players or conditions are unsafe. Youth Games Officials also act in a teaching capacity; they explain calls to youth players and explain rules to coaches.

Minimum Qualifications

Prior experience in basketball, soccer, and/or volleyball as a scorekeeper, official, coach, or player.
Other: Not less than 14 years of age at time of appointment.

Note: All applicants must complete a Parks & Recreation Games Official Application Supplement Form in addition to an Employment Application.

Supplemental Information

A Department of Labor Minor Work permit must be submitted for anyone under 18.
