Job Description


SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting directly to the Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Gardener will tend to and maintain the plants and trails in the IAIA garden, greenhouse, and land restoration project. The incumbent is required to meet these responsibilities according to established policies, procedures, and regulations as directed by the Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs. The incumbent supports the mission, vision, and core values of IAIA.NOTE: This grant-funded position is, as are all IAIA positions subject to the availability of funding.ESSENTAIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage and maintain the IAIA garden and greenhouse using organic and traditional Indigenous practices:
  • Grow seedlings in the greenhouse and prepare garden areas for planting
  • Appropriately water and tend to plants as needed
  • Track and report the amounts of water and fertilizer used, along with all production yields
  • Harvest produce for sale/trade to Bon Appetit or donate to the IAIA community
  • Manage the compost piles
  • With the input of Bon Appetit, develop a production and delivery plan for produce
  • Manage the greenhouse and train student workers in greenhouse practices.
  • Maintain the inventory of all gardening equipment and supplies, and order additional material as needed.
  • Collaborates with IAIA departments regarding agriculture-related education projects.
  • Supervise any volunteers and student interns/workers working in the garden, greenhouse, and trails
  • Manages the plantings and growth of plants and trees around the campus. Includes pollinator oasis plantings, tree pruning, chipping limbs for mulch, and trail maintenance.
  • Complete other related projects and/or assignments as assigned.
RequirementsREQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:Experienced in Traditional and Southwestern gardening and agriculture.PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated experience working with tribes and/or Indigenous education.
  • REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
  • Perform physical and skilled work in the care of the IAIA garden, greenhouse, and land restoration areas.
  • Knowledge of Traditional and Southwestern gardening and agriculture
  • Ability to use professional landscaping and farming equipment
  • Strong manual skills
  • Precision and attention to detail
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Performance of essential functions requires the ability and skill to communicate effectively and efficiently verbally or in writing with varied audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Complete project objectives with nominal direction; starting projects independently (or as assigned), ending projects (or assignments), and completing projects in a timely manner.
  • Ability to adapt and work within changing environments and work situations; cooperate and collaborate respectfully with others.
  • Keep the supervisor apprised of project status, particularly any issues that may affect the completion of projects or meeting deadlines
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Evidence of providing strategic direction.
  • Proactive with a proven ability to build relationships, cultivate internal and external partnerships, and engage in effective decision making.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of values, cultures, customs, and tribal protocols.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work successfully with the IAIA community as related to job responsibilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • To successfully complete the project objectives the incumbent must be able to stand, walk, sit, push; pull; reach; carry; lift; grasp; squat/ stoop; bend/twist the body; use hands to handle/feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands/arms, climb stairs, & effectively interact/communicate with others
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to complete the project objectives in various weather conditions, out of doors, from cold to hot, as well as exposure to air particles, dust, fumes, etc.
