Job Description


What You\'ll Do:The Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Protection is seeking a Geologist to conduct geologic research (e.g. reviews detailed bedrock, glacial, surficial, and subsurface geologic and hydrogeologic maps and documents) to prepare derivative maps and overlays to illustrate site geologic and hydrogeologic conditions, and site-specific investigations via site visits to determine the physical characteristics of hazardous waste sites or other sites under review for public health exposures, toxic chemical release sites and surrounding areas. This position will:

  • assess geological environment to determine extent and nature of chemical contamination and the presence or absence of a completed exposure pathway linking on-site chemicals with off-site communities
  • assist program staff in creating site-specific Public Health Assessment and Public Health Consultation documents to provide graphic presentations of geologic, sampling and other related data
  • conduct and coordinate field investigations for public health consultation sites or in coordination with the other bureau programs (e.g., sampling of private water systems for field parameters and laboratory analysis)
  • review and prepare variety of geologic and hydrogeologic reports, maps and other documentation for public and departmental use (e.g., bedrock and surficial geologic maps, subsurface investigations, technical reports)
  • use environmental mapping databases (e.g., ARC-GIS) to provide graphic presentations of data in support of health assessment and other programmatic activities and investigations
QualificationsPosition Qualifications:Completion of undergraduate core program in geology, hydrogeology or other specialized geologic science; 24 mos. exp. in geologic field, laboratory &/or drafting methods & techniques.-Or completion of graduate core program in geology, hydrogeology or other specialized geologic science; 12 mos. exp. in geologic field, laboratory &/or drafting methods.-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.Job Skills: Geology/HydrologyTechnical Skills: Geology / HydrologyProfessional Skills: Interpreting Data, Observation, Strategic Thinking, PresentingPreferred Qualifications:Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:\xc2\xb7 Completion of graduate or advanced degree in Geology, Geochemistry and/or Hydrogeology\xc2\xb7 Experience working with geology, hydrogeology, natural resources, topography, and major watersheds in the state of Ohio\xc2\xb7 Experience with the use of geologic, topographic and hydrogeologic maps\xc2\xb7 Experience with the collection of environmental samples (e.g., water, soil, air, soil gas)\xc2\xb7 Experience with interpreting and applying laboratory results (e.g., private well data)\xc2\xb7 Experience with site remedial technologies, and federal Superfund and RCRA methods and procedures\xc2\xb7 Experience writing scientific and technical reports/correspondence\xc2\xb7 Experience presenting scientific and technical information to the public\xc2\xb7 Experience with computer software (e.g. MS Office, MS Teams, ArcGIS)All eligible applications shall be reviewed considering the following criteria: qualifications, experience, education, active disciplinary record, and work record.EDUCATIONAL TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS:
