Position Information

Are you interested in an exciting opportunity to serve as the GIS Database Administrator and as the steward of the County\'s geospatial data to support county operations and services for 3,700 employees and 238,000 residents across a 26 square-mile urban community?

The GIS Mapping Center within the (DES) is seeking an innovative GIS Database Administrator to oversee the County\'s GIS data repository, provide professional advice, subject matter expertise, and problem-solving services on GIS data and GIS system architecture issues to members of the County\'s community. The GIS Database Administrator will have an in-depth knowledge of GIS protocols to conduct advanced technical tasks, geospatial analysis and modeling techniques to advise on geo-enabling County systems and operations and enhance the decision-making process.

Specific duties include:

• Provides input to the strategic direction and architecture decisions for the County\'s GIS infrastructure, integration, and other GIS-enabled solutions;
• Consults with users and designs and develops database models and writes tools to extract, translate, and load data between systems;
• Oversees the implementation and maintenance of the County\'s GIS databases;
• Publishes data for internal and external use and maintains the GIS Open Data repository;
• Evaluates new geospatial technologies and makes recommendations for new services or modifications to existing services through the use of those technologies;
• Maintains a current perspective of the evolving geospatial industry, including the design and architecture, best practices, and other technology, analytical, and reporting trends;
• Provides oversight and guidance of GIS analysts and provides project management support for geospatial and integration projects;
• Plans, defines, and implements geospatial projects across platforms and organizational boundaries;
• Serves on and/or leads departmental, County-wide, or regional committees responsible for identifying geospatial issues and developing technology solutions for complex business processes; and
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative problem solver with a demonstrated understanding of the complexities and challenges of geospatial data and application integration and management in a municipal government; and possess technical skills necessary for leading numerous initiatives while working as an integral member of the GIS team.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:

• Bachelor\'s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or other field related to GIS from an accredited college or university; and
• Considerable experience in user support of interactive mapping applications, development or maintenance of relational data or relational databases, in application design, development, implementation, or maintenance, and/or complex hardware/software support functions.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with GIS Certification and/or experience in one or more of the following:

• Database Administration/Management (SQL Server, etc.);
• Esri Server Configuration;
• Working experience with the development of geospatial databases; and/or
• Troubleshooting skills.

Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver\'s license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant\'s driving record.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Flexible work schedule Monday through Friday between 8 am to 5 pm with telework opportunities. Some tasks will require hours outside of regular working hours.
