Continuous Recruitment, Statewide: The Division of Personnel (DOP) anticipates several vacancies in the near future for this classification. This classification has positions in every area of the state and with multiple state agencies. Make sure you mark in your county selection any county you would be willing to work in or commute to so you can be placed on the proper register. Under close supervision, at the entry-level, these positions perform work acquiring the knowledge, skills and abilities to provide basic personal and nursing care related to the treatment, habilitation and rehabilitation of patients and residents at state-operated facilities or in a community setting. These positions learn to perform basic nursing and personal care, and/or basic therapeutic treatment. Travel may be required. Perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

These positions are distinguished by their performance in a training capacity. They acquire knowledge and participate in training until they reach the full-performance level. These positions complete the hours of coursework and practicum, or participate in training, as described during the hiring process. Some positions will require successful completion of a written examination and/or a skills competency evaluation to complete training for the full-performance level.

Examples of Work

Acquire knowledge of the policies and procedures of the department, facility or service entity.

Acquire knowledge of the concepts of behavioral health, mental health, health disorders and related physical conditions and treatment approaches.

Acquire knowledge and abilities in simple nursing care, personal care and hygiene and treatment and programmatic activities.

Learn to observe and record patients\' behavior, attitude and physical condition and report significant changes to proper staff.

Learn to bathe, clothe and feed patients and perform other personal care and hygiene duties for patients; perform or assist patients in laundering and mending clothes.

Learn to perform basic nursing care services under close supervision, such as taking temperature, blood pressure and pulse readings, applying soaks and compresses, and cleaning sores and wounds.

Learn to teach patients daily living skills such as eating, bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, etc.

Learn to interact with patients in a therapeutic manner.

Learn to participate with other treatment team members in therapeutic and rehabilitation activities.

Learn to perform duties necessary to maintain a safe, clean and orderly living and work area.

Learn to escort patients to meals, therapy, medical appointments and scheduled activities within and outside the facility.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to complete a required training program in order to acquire knowledge and abilities in basic nursing care, personal care and hygiene and treatment activities.

Ability to perform entry-level duties in simple nursing care, personal care and hygiene and treatment activities.

Ability to read and follow simple written or oral instructions and manuals.

Ability to perform basic arithmetic.

Ability to keep routine records.

Ability to observe the rights and personal dignity of patients.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients and other employees.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: High school diploma or the equivalent.

OR

Substitution: Certification or registration as a Nursing Assistant or Nurse Aide may substitute for the required training.

Special Requirement for Veterans Nursing Facility, Long-Term Care Facilities (Hopemont Hospital, Lakin Hospital, John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center and Jackie Withrow Hospital): Certification or registration as a Nursing Assistant or Nurse Aide.
