Job Description


The Heat and Vent Specialist is responsible for the maintenance of heating and ventilation systems within Anchorage School District facilities. The location of the work station is subject to contract language concerning shift location/bids. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off. The following are required: * A high school diploma or equivalent.

  • At a minimum, must possess an Alaska second class boiler operator\xe2\x80\x99s license or demonstrate a commensurate level of experience and knowledge to perform second class boiler license work.
  • The Anchorage School District requires that the selected applicant for this position be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment.
The following are preferred: * A minimum of four years of experience within the past six years in the field of heating and ventilation. Work experience must evidence ability to perform tasks assigned.
  • A minimum of three years of experience within the past five years in the field of heating and ventilation control, with emphasis in electronics. Work experience must show evidence of ability to perform tasks assigned.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic practical application.
Job Functions * Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs heating, ventilation, and automation systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on heating control systems.
  • Corrects various heating problems from cold/hot rooms to boiler features.
  • Repairs leaking circulating pumps.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs.
  • Changes fan/pump motors including belts.
  • Makes required changes to Building Automation System (BAS) for heating and lighting controls.
  • Replaces or adds new equipment for proper or improved heating controls.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the BAS control as it pertains to HVAC and lighting.
  • Reads, troubleshoots, and edits basic PPCL control language.
  • Interprets and works from plans, prints, specifications, and established maintenance procedures.
  • Writes reports as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge of unit ventilators and fan components including exhaust systems, fluid transfer pumps, and building automation system controls for heating and ventilation systems.
  • Maintains knowledge of standard heating, ventilation, and mechanical equipment including fire tube, water tube, cast iron sectional, wet and dry back boilers, gas-fired and oil-fired furnaces.
  • Routinely works at heights over 20 feet.
  • Orders required materials for assigned jobs.
  • Proficiently uses appropriate computer applications for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.
  • Works cooperatively with others and within established maintenance and safety procedures.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.
