Job Responsibilities
Operates and maintains a backhoe for shoulder and drainage ditching operations throughout the county. Acts as a lead worker of a crew repairing hi/lo shoulder, cleaning out drainage ditches and structures throughout the county and instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment and vehicle safety, or when working with hazardous material and waste. Operates a motor grader to assists with maintenance, construction and repair activities. Operates and maintains heavy motorized equipment (e.g. tandem dump truck) for hauling waste material/dirt, trees. Operates a spreader, tractor with broom, large roller, front end loader, etc. May investigate complaints of property owners and recommend action to be taken. Assumes supervisor\'s duties and responsibilities during his absence and present and produces daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as HMMS and the maintenance requests and complaint forms. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered and hand tools in various phases of roadway maintenance (chainsaw, shovel, bush axe, weed eater, drill, wrench, air compressor, etc.) Sets up traffic control according to SCMUTCD Standards to warn motorist of road work ahead. Works on-call for after hours emergencies and leads and/or works with a crew during emergencies and inclement weather operations. May work extended hours, overtime, or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator\'s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
