Job Summary

This position serves as the instructional leader for the adult education program. It is responsible for conducting and overseeing classroom observations to ensure that high-quality instruction is being conducted, coordinating local professional development to ensure instructor preparation and learner outcomes, and serving as an instructional resource for program staff. It reports to the Director, Adult Education and Literacy Services.

Essential Job Functions

  • Works as a team member to meet program goals and performance measures.
  • Works and communicates effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Develops and implements curriculum based on AELS instructional standards (College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education, Maryland Digital Literacy Framework, and Maryland s Professional Standards for Teachers in Adult Education) and research-based instructional practice for adult literacy and English language acquisition; supports teachers to connect assessment, curriculum, and instruction; supports face-to-face and online instruction.
  • Observes classroom instruction and provides feedback to instructional staff, mentors, and coaches; supports program teachers to improve gaps in instruction.
  • Identifies professional development needs through instructor observation, learner outcome data and instructor survey(s); completes the Professional Development Plan annually with support from other leadership staff; coordinates and conducts the delivery of professional development to ensure instructor preparation and learner achievement.
  • Promotes strategies to retain learners.
  • Works together with others to address the needs of all learners, including individuals with disabilities and English language learners.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the program s Data Quality Plan.
  • Performs other duties based upon program demographics, enrollment trends, and the needs of target populations.
  • Attends state Instructional Specialist and professional development meetings and communicates/implements pertinent information to appropriate local program staff; stays informed of current research and best practices in adult education; participates in technical assistance; communicates and trains local program staff on instructional practices; trains and mentors Instructional Specialists in other local programs upon request; serves on assigned committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • Bachelor s degree
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience
  • Adult Education teaching experience
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Experience using technology for instructional delivery and distance learning
  • Experience training and mentoring instructors
  • Experience developing and delivering professional development
  • Willingness to regularly work evenings (average 2 evenings per week)
Preferred:
  • Master s Degree
  • At least one year of experience in an Adult Education and Family Literacy Services (AEFLA) funded Adult Education program
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Knowledge of: learning theories relevant to adults, adult education instructional standards (including the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education and the English Language Proficiency Standards), professional development standards/ methods/techniques, assessment/curriculum design and development, and instructional processes and strategies based on research in adult learning and development. Knowledge of all LACES data elements and Intake/Update forms
Supplemental Information

SALARY INFORMATION:

This Grant funded position will be placed on the College, 12-month exempt staff salary scale at grade 103. Actual salary placement based on qualifications and experience. Position includes excellent benefits package.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is normally sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Hear/talk/communicate Must be able to exchange information and communicate
  • Visual Acuity/ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental acuity Able to focus, concentrate, understand and convey subject matter
  • Repetitive motion (i.e. keyboarding)
  • Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

College campus, direct contact with students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office, meeting, and training rooms; use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations and College policies.

TO QUALIFY FOR EMPLOYMENT, SELECTED CANDIDATES MUST:
  • successfully complete a criminal background check (for designated positions)
  • be able to work on campus as of the first day of employment
  • be a resident of DE, MD, PA, VA, WV or DC as of the first day of employment
  • be currently authorized to work in the US, as the College does not offer Visa sponsorships
