Job Description




POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision to perform biomedical research using skills in cell culture, molecular biology and protein chemistry and perform experiments on live animal (mice) models.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Perform research work in medical and related technical areas using laboratory skills in molecular biology, immunoassays, and cell culture (40%).

  • Perform experiments on and collect biological samples from mouse models for preterm birth. (20%).
  • Maintain records of experiments, record experiment results, and communicate regarding experiment status and results with supervisor (20%).
  • Assist students and clinical trainees in specific research procedures (10%).
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Maintain laboratory equipment utilized in experiments (5%).
  • Perform other duties as assigned (5%).
CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research.

University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Daily contact with clinical trainees and graduate students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor\'s degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate\'s degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS * Has knowledge of, or ability and desire to learn, basic concepts and procedures within the field of reproductive biology, pregnancy and parturition.
  • Adherence to instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Desire and ability to learn novel techniques.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and students and other laboratory staff. Ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
  • Good organization skills and ability to prioritize, work on multiple projects simultaneously, and attend to detail to complete tasks and meet deadlines
  • Must demonstrate compliance with university animal research and care policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Must demonstrate compassion for animals within CWRU facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center\xe2\x80\x99s mission. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.
  • Previous experience working with animals preferred.
  • Must be able and willing to maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness and utilize protective gear to protect the health the animals.
WORKING CONDITIONS

The laboratories, located on the 8th floor of MacDonald Women\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, have abundant bench space for biochemical analyses and animal handling and manipulations. Desk space with a personal work station is provided. The labs are equipped with fume hoods and facilities to store hazardous and non-hazardous materials. Employee will undergo training in laboratory safety and the handling of material with a blood-borne pathogen risk. Appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, laboratory coat and eyewear will be provided, and all duties will be performed in a safe/approved manner. Major physical demands include transferring animals to the laboratory from the animal holding facility.

Case Western Reserve University\'s animal facilities are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and is managed according to the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals\xe2\x80\x9d appropriate Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Public Health Service \xe2\x80\x9cPolicy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." This position, and all animal research personnel, are subject to internal compliance to SOM Animal Resource Center Standard Operating Procedures and to compliance regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, the State of Ohio Veterinary Practice Act, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration regulatory guidelines, US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine regulations and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
