Job Description


The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world\'s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.The Education department is seeking a full-time Learning Labs Project Manager to coordinate maintenance, staffing, supplies and programming schedules for three learning lab spaces. These spaces are: * The Museum\'s Discovery Room: a hands-on learning environment for children of all ages with their adult companions.

  • The Hall of Human Origins Lab: a combination classroom space and hands-on learning environment that feature activities related to the study of human evolution and health through a variety of scientific fields.
  • The Learning with Data Lab: a technology-rich new classroom focused on developing skills related to large data collection, analysis, visualization and computational thinking strategies.
Job duties include:
  • Serve as a project manager for the operational initiatives of the learning lab spaces in collaboration with various programmatic teams of the Education department (i.e., Children and Family Learning, Youth Initiatives, Teacher Professional Development).
  • Supervise and coordinate volunteer and staff work schedules for Discovery Room open hours and weekend drop-in days in the HHO lab.
  • Coordinate support staff schedules and supply needs for the Learning with Data Lab during its pilot programming phase.
  • Track and document staff onboarding and training schedules for paid staff and volunteers assigned to facilitate programming in these spaces.
  • Develop maintenance plans and coordinate the maintenance of lab equipment, imaging equipment such as microscopes and technology across the learning labs.
  • Coordinate maintenance of exhibit elements in the learning labs in collaboration with the Education Operations and Exhibitions teams, including the skeletal cast collection in the HHO lab, interactive displays and collections in the Discovery Room and 3D-printed object collection in the Learning with Data Lab.
  • Track inventory on consumable supplies in learning labs and manage the supply ordering schedule to ensure adequate stocks.
  • Support the Education Operations team in the development and maintenance of efficient resource tracking and sharing systems across departmental teams.
  • Contribute to operational planning for new initiatives across education spaces.
The expected salary range for the Learning Labs Project Manager is $65,000/annual - $72,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree in a science field.
  • 5 years of program administration experience in informal education.
  • Experience managing research projects in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to work some holidays, weekends and evenings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with adult volunteers and interns.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the care and maintenance requirements of basic laboratory and imaging equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Spanish fluency.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
